- There were a few magical moments this week where I had to stop and just watch. 1) Using @seesawlearning, students took a pic of the book cover, recorded themselves reading the beginning, then explained why they felt the author chose to lead the book in that way. This was probably one of my favorite activities ever because it had so many digital lessons in it, plus incorporated writing and reading fluency/comprehension. 2)Researching a TX region and putting together Google slides. Students got so excited looking up animals and plants, becoming the experts of their region. They also were able to learn a few Chromebook shortcuts!

- I got a call on Friday from the local book store as #Harvey was coming in. A used copy of a book request was in. I've slowly been collecting #zaneandthehurricane for a class set..to be read as my 2nd read aloud. Today I got to pick it up, and the change in my students' background knowledge is not lost on me. The bookstore is okay. My family is okay. Many weren't so fortunate, including colleagues and students. I hope that this beautiful community of Instagram teachers will keep your hearts open and look for opportunities to help teachers, students, and schools in need.

- I have an extremely diverse student population, so finding books where the kids can feel represented is a necessity. Not only that, teachers have to recognize we can be a safe space where dangerous generalizations are dismantled. We read #onegreenapple by #evebunting yesterday. For day 7 of school, it opened up a fantastic dialogue for students to tell me about their parents coming from Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines, Pakistan, Palestine, and Iraq. Check out a few of the #padlet reflections. *2nd picture says, "America went through a lot to earn our freedom."
