- #Monkey Monday! One of the bigger reasons for going to #Borneo was to see the Proboscis Monkey, known for their giant nose. I find them both hilarious and amazing in action when they do their giant 4-limbed leap across the tree canopies, with the big pot-belly projecting in front of them. They're friendly around people, since they feed mostly on leaves and insects, but that can sometimes be a negative, due to their dwindling population (due to forest fires and poaching). Also pictured here are #Orangutans (from the rehabilitation centre) and a #Macaque family, that are seemingly cute at this moment but many people forget these are wild animals to keep distance from. You quickly remember this when you get hassled in the early morning as they tag-team descend upon you, trying to swipe your breakfast =__= #dontfeedtheanimals BTW August 19 is #WorldOrangutanDay

- In addition to #Georgetown, #Penang, #Melaka (or #Malacca) is also a listed #unescoworldheritage site. The historical centre seemed to be a tourist monstrosity that is present in general attitudes and socioeconomic values that becomes especially punctuated where the end of this shophouse row stands a 3-storey H&M overlooking the canal. With a lot of factors that I can't get into right now, including size, geographic location and local governance, perhaps this is an example of cultural dilution and lack of accountability that can be the negative occurrence of attaining #unesco status. Mostly though, the same story of foreign investment that imbalances the real estate market.

- Thin Seng has been making soy sauce since 1912 in the traditional method: soak, brine, ferment and mash from earthenware jars in their front lot. The operation runs upon 4 people now, supplying soy sauce (as well as chili sauce, hoisin, amongst others) to many restaurants around #Penang and #Georgetown. While I pestered them with a million questions, they gifted me their distinctive black vinegar - not as tangy as the typical Chinese version, but a little more sweet and deep with their addition of 陈皮 (preserved mandarin peel). #heritage #artisan #foodstory
