- Today was part 1 of hog slaughter day. We are a flower farm with a homesteading habit. We have raised these sweet animals for meat and today was reckoning day. I almost called it off yesterday. I got food poisoning and was sick as hell and just nothing in the world felt right and killing the pigs felt like the worst possible thing to add to the list of pain in this world. Then I woke up and felt so much better, got out of bed and breathed in the somber winter air and knew that it was the right thing to do. We had helped @alittleweather with one of their slaughters but had never raised or done our own and were nervous. There was nothing easy about today and I know that is part of the lesson. We want to have a deep and close connection with where our food comes from and I can’t even describe the holy feelings that come with raising, slaughtering and butchering these amazing creatures. I don’t know if there are words for it really. I know that today felt right in so many ways- we were joined by some real good friends and guided by some really awesome new friends. The children played a lot. We talked with them a lot about the whole process and checked in multiple times and they seemed to really understand the whole thing and be fine, really fine with it all. We all ate really good food. It felt like a puzzle piece of our farm life had finally fit- this is one of the reasons we wanted to do this crazy life- to know the land and the plants and the animals in a deep and true way. Thank you @intentionalswine for being the perfect family to make this happen with and for all your love, guidance and beautiful thoughts on doing all of this yourself. And thank you to our homies @more_kal_bal @dwncc @woollygomphus and @blackthornfarmandkitchen for ruling so hard ❤️❤️❤️
