- WR Hearst wrote to architect Julia Morgan in 1936, "One thing which San Simeon really needs is fountains. I mean fountains which fount...On the west terrace we should have a large spouting fountain in the middle or else two on the sides." Morgan did install a fountain near the west terrace. Atop that fountain is David, a bronze statue from the 1920s. This version of David is a copy of Donatello's David (c. 1440) that sits in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. // #hearstcastle #david #juliamorgan #pacificocean #view #bluesky #palmtrees #california #californiastateparks #hearst #fountains

- Collection Highlight: Double bust, Greco-Roman, 1st-2nd century B.C.; The cast stone lamp standards with two faces at the Neptune Pool were inspired by this object. The original is carved of white marble and sits at 11 inches tall. It is located in the library on a small table in the south alcove and can be seen on the Upstairs Suites tour. // #hearstcastle #takeatour #castateparks #library #grecoroman #doublebust #sansimeon #california #centralcoast #upstairssuitestour #juliamorgan #neptunepool

- The spring season of Evening tours kicked off last weekend. Evening tours are offered on most Friday and Saturday nights from now until May 19th. Tours are 100 minutes long and feature a nice combination of the areas typically shown on our 3 main daytime tours. These tours have the added benefit of our Living History docents dressed in 1930s costume who are stationed around the estate as if they were all invited up to a party put on by Mr. Hearst and Ms. Davies. Come join the fun! http://bit.ly/2jt63QA // #sansimeon #hearstcastle #eveningtour #livinghistory #1930s #dinnerparty #castateparks #juliamorgan #visitslo

- When the tide gets really low at the WR Hearst Memorial Beach across from the Castle - one can see the old pilings left from the original pier used by Hearst. The old pier was instrumental in the moving of his supplies and art objects from ships to the warehouses in San Simeon. Eventually the pier was replaced (1957) with the one that stands today. The old warehouses are still there. Photo credit: Barry Rouxel-Berg // #sansimeon #wrhearststatebeach #hearstcastle #pier #beach #castateparks
