- I loved this grim, brutal tale of monsters at sea. That’s human monsters — I thought there were going to be aliens in this and I was verrrrrry confused when none appeared! But the horrifying men that populate this story were quite enough. It’s Moby Dick meets Heart of Darkness on ice (with a dash of Cormac McCarthy), a relentlessly dark period piece set on a whaling ship in the 1800s headed for the Arctic Circle where near-certain doom awaits. The writing is modern and spare and often very beautiful and I enjoyed the descent into the darkness for a spell. Also, I loved the cover. Very important. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thecocobook #whatimreading #amreading #book #ianmcguire #thenorthwater #whaling #bookclub #historicalfiction #bookrecommendation #bookrec #fiction #reader #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookworm #bookish #booknerd #booklover #novel #readingissexy #manbookerprize #summerreading #iphoneography #iphoneonly #summerreadingstack

- Guys! I saw this swoonworthy film last week, and the following day found the novel it was based on during my regular Sydney second-hand bookstore prowling. Such luck! I devoured it in a day and am still lost in a romantic Italian summer daydream. This is such a profound and beautiful story of first love, desire, memory, and its indelible lifelong impact. And now that I’ve read the book I want to rewatch the film again to admire the way it was adapted - perfectly, in my opinion. Anyone else seen/read it? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thecocobook #whatimreading #amreading #book #andreaciman #callmebyyourname #bookclub #bookrecommendation #bookrec #fiction #reader #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookworm #bookish #booknerd #booklover #readingissexy #bookpile #bookshelf #summerreadingstack

- Really enjoyed Min Jin Lee’s Korean-Japanese family saga Pachinko. It spans almost a century, following four generations of a Korean family as they move to Japan, weather the Second World War, and battle the daily racism and xenophobia that was the lot of ethnic Koreans in Japan during that time. Generation by generation, they fight to slowly carve out a space for themselves and to improve their lot in life. A fascinating look at an angle of history I didn’t know much about; I love to armchair travel and I love the way good fiction immerses you in the lives and perspectives of others. There’s not much else that can help break down cultural barriers in quite the same way, I think. A goal this year is to read more fiction from other cultures - I read too much American and British stuff at the moment and I need to branch out. Please send your recommendations my way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thecocobook #whatimreading #amreading #japan #pachinko #minjinlee #korea #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookclub #fiction #booksbooksbooks #reader #book #bookstagram #bookworm #bookish #booknerd #booklover #readingissexy #bookpile #bookshelf #summerreadingstack
