‪#‎tbt‬ to 1968 when choreographer Alvin Ailey and his company, the @alvinailey American Dance Theater, first performed at BAM. Ailey wrote in his autobiography, “The concert dance scene was basically closed to black dancers... I very much wanted to be a choreographer... and the time had come for me to make my own decisions."
AAADT continued to perform regularly at BAM over the years, and notably celebrated its 50th anniversary season in the Howard Gilman Opera House in 2008. Throughout ‪#‎BlackHistoryMonth‬ we’ll continue to highlight the many legendary black artists and thinkers who’ve graced our stages.
