- The Autumn Garden.... . I'm not wishing time away, I'm looking back to one of the best autumn gardens in the world. It's grim out there today so thinking of other beautiful places might help for a few minutes. There's a blog post too if you would also like to zoom around my favourite place. - 'Reading is my favourite occupation when I have leisure for it and books to read'....Anne Bronte. . There is nothing like a quiet, cold January to get you through the pile of books by the bedside, or in our house, also by the sofa; in the kitchen; on the landing- they are everywhere just asking to be either read or have flowers plonked on top. Two guests on our Bronte workshop last year were insistent that I read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. "She's the best", they said. I aim to have it finished by....well, is spring a decent amount of time? I'm currently embroiled in Alias Grace and am ashamed to admit I've never before read anything by Margaret Atwood. That's something I'll rectify at once because she is quite superb. I'm eagerly awaiting the re-start of #honeysucklereads but in the meantime if you fancy joining in with Ms Atwood or dear Anne then you know I like to chat about books. Off to light the fire and snuggle down .... . . #smallcornerofyorkshire , #winterflowers, #booksandflowers , #bookstagram , #thequietwinter , #winterlookslikethis , #flowersandotherstories , #aquietstyle , #dsfloral, #bronte200

- "No-one but an experienced florist could make up the intricate set pieces such as bouquets, headdresses and so on...." from Constance Spry on wedding flowers. I know that the wild, naturalistic way of 'doing the flowers' which is currently with us may give the impression that little intricacy is involved these days in making wedding flowers. Those of us who do them regularly appreciate that's not quite true. Equally, the 'proper' techniques of wiring still have their place in wedding work especially the kind that needs to be long lasting and delicate. On Tuesday 6th March we are teaming up with Lindsey from @thewhitehorseflower to teach bouquets two ways- the wired and the natural. It promises to be a day of great flowers, lots of learning, good food, and guaranteed laughter. We won't mention the weather. The class size is limited to two, and one place remains available. If you would like it please message me.. . . #weddingflowers , #bouquets, #flowerworkshop , #flowers, #constancespry, #neverstoplearning , #floralinspo . . . - New books, very old flowers..... Treated myself to one from each sister, purely for aesthetic reasons as I have them all in paperback but the newly organised bookshelves were missing proper Yorkshire substance (and style and of course we are all about style over substance aren't we?!πŸ™„). I'm also missing proper flowers. There are only so many times I can keep rearranging the same bits of honesty, hydrangea, Nigella, cobea vine and golden bracken. Fear not dear Reader, today there will be a delivery of ....well, I'm not quite sure what but I'll manage. So #fridayflowerfettling may happen, but probably not until I've cleared the detritus from the workshop - send help πŸ˜€. .. . #smallcornerofyorkshire , #flowersathome , #flowersandotherstories , #flowersandbooks, #justbefloral , #bookstagram , #stilllife, #bronte200, #underthefloralspell, #winterlookslikethis

- On beauty.... Caught the end of a programme last night on the cost of looking good. It's a mine field out there, so I shan't bother. Here's my own top tip: match your highlights to a grassy border if you want to look good in any garden 🀣 Here also is one of the best borders in the world, @cambogarden and, I'm part way through a blog post on the place which I'll probably finish in the hairdressers πŸ˜€. . . #newyearramblings , #camboestate , #fogharcambo , #gardeninspo, #weareplacemakers , #cultivatingplace, #seasonalfloweralliance , #gardensillustrated

- Coffee..... It gives me a funny turn. Indeed the day I watched this being made I had one - although it might not have been the coffee, it could just have been the excitement of having so many beautiful flowers in the room and the Mexican magician @lamusadelasflores using them. I still don't quite know how everything she makes turns into something so exquisite. Maybe if I watch her again this year (without coffee) ..... . The coffee tones here are from the brown aisle of @carolsiddorn's open air flower market although the roses were pilfered by Gabriela from right under my nose. And when you let her outside with snips you don't give her any boundaries because you know she's going to do something very, very beautiful. Koko Loko front and back πŸ˜€. . Photo by @snug_gallery

- The Summer Garden.... Yes, I know, it's winter, but yesterday I finished a brilliant book called Life in the Garden by Penelope Lively in which I found this little nugget: 'The gardener floats free of the present and looks forward.....Gardeners are dealt a rich store of anticipation'. . So, with that in mind more bare root roses are in the ground and I saw no reason why I shouldn't look back at some photos of my favourites. Margaret Merril is one of the best ever roses (IMHO) but as we have no cover here I only have one and that is usually wet and soggy. But, KoKo Loko, well she's a different matter. She seems to like the Yorkshire environment and weirdly flourishes in the rain turning from the deep colour with almost reddish/blush outer petals to the more lilacy/nude colour as she opens out into a lovely ruffly shape. We have some more of her to look forward to this summer. Also (just because it's in this photo) a plant I've mentioned before which is SO good: Gillenia trifoliata. Little tiny white dancers all summer and then, the foliage in autumn is sublime and don't get me going on the seed heads. Oh, and it's rabbit 🐰 proof πŸ˜€. Enough of my ramblings, off out for a real ramble in the winter weather soon....but first....a new book πŸ€— . . . #gardeninspo, #britishflowers , #roses, #flowersandotherstories , #inspiredbypetals, #thegatheredgarden, #underthefloralspell

- The human impulse to garden.....and my impulse to be in them!! I don't know how many of you listen to podcasts but, as someone who spends a lot of time in my own company in the workshop, walking the not very loquacious dog, out in the garden or driving for miles, I listen to them a lot- it keeps the grey cells working. One of my current favourites is that of Jennifer Jewell @cultivating_place and I may have mentioned before her interview with Dan Pearson as well as other favourites of mine (take a bow @thomasbloomflowers and @cultivatedbychristin ). Anyway, I was dropped upon when asked if I'd like to be interviewed and to chat about my own rituals in the garden in winter. This last bit worried me a lot, since my January motto is to stay indoors, keep warm, read books or seed catalogues and listen to podcasts! Anyway, said podcast has been released and the link will be in my profile for the next couple of days if you are fancying a weekend nap and need something to help you drift off. This photo is taken in a garden I need to get back to quickly. In fact a trip has been planned soon, to see the snowdrops @cambogarden and there's only a few weeks to go. Talking of gardens, there's a ton of Muckers Mulch out there and apparently it's my job this weekend to use it.....that does not give you all any scope for comparisons 😳 . - Deep sleep.... I've just been woken up in what I assumed was the middle of the night. Turns out it was actually 7am, and very late for me . I think one of life's biggest luxuries is to be allowed to wake up just as it gets light and not before. So, if you see a certain darkness about some of the flowers that have come out of here this week that's why. I'm trying to come to like it!! I'm not finding it easy. In other good news I'm off today to The Bronte Parsonage to see how they 'wrap up' some of the collection for the winter. I understand I've already missed them checking the undercarriage of Mr Bronte's best suit trousers - there is a much funnier story but I'd better not reveal it lest I get into trouble πŸ˜€. . . . #flowersathome , #flowersinwinter , #wildsfloral, #gloomandglow , #underthefloralspell, #ihavethisthingfordarkness

A pal today tells me it all needs to come down tomorrow which I always find slightly bemusing as it surely seems appropriate to keep the twinkling lights and jingling bells until the end of the dark month of February? - The Spring Garden.... I know, I know, embrace the season you're in, and honestly I am doing that. Each day I check to see what little gem is on the way. There's a most impressive sweet box (I won't trouble spell check with the Latin on that), the viburnums are resplendent and then there's the tiny crab apple I've got to 'keep my mitts off'. The hellebores are starting to ask to be brought inside (well, some are) and there are very definite signs of the new species tulips outside the workshop. So, when a bride for spring asks what might our centrepieces look like....it could be this πŸ€”. . . #sensingspring

I'm not quite ready to give up the pine cones just yet though. This one was a gift from @pickingposiesbybecky and it has patiently been waiting for a moment. We had that moment this very afternoon, whilst I discovered something else great- Classic Coronation Street- my new guilty secret for grey afternoons. - Skeletons in the....... .....garden, although goodness knows what's in the closets, that's a job I've been putting off for some time and since my chief wardrobe sorter has left for Australia I'm definitely in need of help....(all applications appreciated). I digress, it's skeletons in the winter garden that keep us, and the birds, amused at the moment. In particular the little belter that I mention from time to time: Thalictrum, probably the hardest working set of plants we own. Fluffy, dancing flowers in spring, glorious, nuanced leaves in autumn and these delicate seed heads in winter. One of those plants that Elliot Forsyth @cambogarden told us all about- good when growing, great in bloom and even better in death πŸ€—. Not surprisingly I've been bringing them indoors- you've probably seen the one I've been using for the past two months in pretty much every photo. #wastenotwantnot because we are after all in the #smallcornerofyorkshire. . . #wintergarden , #gardeninspo , #flowersandotherstories , #flowersathome, #cultivatingplace
