- My uncle, @stephenshames, has been a photojournalist for over 50 years and has harnessed the power of photography to raise awareness around a multitude of social issues, one of which being race. Heโ€™s most famously known for his intimate look at the inner workings of the Black Panther Party and I received his blessing to share these images he took of Martin Luther King, Jr. As a sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley in 1967, he attended one of MLKโ€™s last large-scale public addresses to 7,000 students. From what he tells me, my uncle was in the restroom when in walked Martin Luther King, Jr. They began casually talking as they washed their hands and continued the conversation up until MLK took to the podium. These are the images that my uncle captured. As MLK once said, โ€œOur lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matterโ€.

- This year was a year filled with going, seeing, feeling, breathing and growing. A practice of embracing disappointment and sorrow and reveling in moments of joy and accomplishment. I tend not to set any resolutions for the New Year, because you yourself are always a work in progress. All of this that we share is simply a highlight reel of our lives. But, Iโ€™m learning to embrace my high-highs and low-lows and genuinely look forward to another healthy year of growth. So, cheers to you and wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year! ๐Ÿพ
