- Codingā€¢ Roboticsā€¢ Curriculum Last term, I began working with teachers to help implement coding/ robotics across all stage from ES1 - Stage 3. I have experience of using many coding programmes with students of all ages. I used to teach coding/robotics as standalone lessons. While I agree that there is a place for these standalone lessons, it is important that student know that they are coding and building robots for a purpose. I have first hand experience seeing the rewards that students gain when they are coding for a purpose and audience. ā€¢ The first step in order for students to create a product using code, is that they need to understand the purpose behind it. They must have extensive knowledge about the purpose of the product. Thatā€™s where our job as teachers comes in. They need to know this content in order to transfer their skills and knowledge to create their design. ā€¢ The next step was deciding the type of resource that would be used. Thatā€™s where majority of my time was spent was to source age appropriate resources that would enable students to develop a progression of skills as they move through the school. There are many robotic kits out there but the challenge is to find a kit that students can be creative with, can be used in any curricular area and has the ability to promote critical thinking. ā€¢ Students require the opportunity to develop their skills in using these resources. Thatā€™s where the standalone lessons come into play. Students need to know the ins and outs of a resource in order to know how to use it for a purpose. ā€¢ It is important for students to work collaboratively in small groups that will enable them to think critically and relate with others. Students use the following process: Prototype - Pitch- Feedback- Amend prototype - Build -Present- Evaluate. Through this process the students are able to meet their learning goals and reflect if their creation achieved the desired outcome. #codingandrobotics #creativeandcriticalthinking #designthinking #nextgen #21stcenturyskills #nswteacher #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

- Our discussion led us to think about does a maker space need to be a designated space in the classroom? Our goal was to ensure that students passions and interest were nurtured in more depth. We had to think about ways of finding out students passions and interests, who can support them and what resources are available to promote these interests. Currently, we are immersing the students to find out more about their interest. Students carried out their own hexagonal thinking activity where they categorised their interests. The students will collaborate and link each otherā€™s interests in order to enhance their own interest. It will be interesting to see how the studentsā€™ discover how their interests can make a better world. #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #studentsinterests #citizensoftomorrow #designthinking

- Makerspaces = Makers + pace or Maker + space At St Lukeā€™s we have just begun our journey about building our understanding about Makerspaces. We are working closely with No Tosh to bring our ideas together and develop them through the process of: Immersion- Synthesis- Ideation- Prototyping- Feedforward What comes into your mind when you first here about makerspaces? This question sparked a an interesting discussion amongst our staff. One thing that was quite obvious was that it was a place where it sparks curiosity and students able to think critically and creatively. We carried out a hexagonal thinking activity that helped combine some of our ideas about what a maker space should look like. It was a fascinating activity where we had to join all pieces of the hexagons together and explain our thinking as a group. We used a variety of starting points and were able to make deepen our thinking about the connectivity of our ideas. - Teaching robotics with a purpose The possibilities of implementing robotics in the curriculum is immense. However implementing it effectively with a clear purpose can be challenging and exciting at the same time. Students show a great enthusiasm playing with a variety of tech gadgets and coding. It was important for me that students are able to realise their full potential using a robotics kit but also see the possibility of it working in a real world scenario. What makes it more real for my stage 3 students than the western Sydney airport that will be built in the next few years?? So as part of our science work this term, I decided to help students understand how robotics can be implemented and be part of the airport. The students immersed themselves by gathering information about all aspects of the airport build. The students were fascinated at looking at current robotic prototypes that were being trialled out to help out passengers, security etc. One of the exciting moments of this project was a Google hangout with Mr. Greg Gately from Kedlin Screening who explained his work with airport security and answered some interesting questions from the students. The students were able to use the information given to help design their prototypes for an aspect of service for the airport. The students then had to pitch their idea to their peers and received feedback. All students were engaged and used the feedback to design version 2 of their prototype. Using Lego We Do 2.0 they are now beginning to build their robotic model using their own code. Seeing these stage 3 students engaged and combining skills between the world of literacy and technology with a purpose makes their learning and my teaching worthwhile. While itā€™s important for student to explore and play with a variety of robotics kits, itā€™s my job as a teacher to make sure that students use these skills in a real world scenarios where it might spark the curiosity for student to ask why and how. Who knows it might influence someone to be the next Steve Jobs to create something that would benefit the world we live in.

- ā€¢Planā€¢Draftā€¢Editā€¢Proofreadā€¢Publish Teaching students about the process of writing, gives the students the skill of writing in a variety of genres and apply this knowledge to all other curricular areas. To begin with I used the gradual realise of responsibility model: I do - we do -you do. I have found that students benefit a great deal through modelling activities. It sets out clear expectations of what is required to be successful in their learning. Students need to know at the very beginning that they are writing for an audience! Plan - My students have a choice to plan through mindmaps, lists, notes etc. Draft- This is a key process where the students are now writing sentences and paragraphs using their key ideas I find that this is the process where I am able to guide them by discussing their ideas. Students have a sense of achievement when they are able to tick of their plan as they write. Edit & Proofread- This process is key to improve the quality of their writing. This process is not simply correcting capital letters and punctuation. It is a key step where they are able to reread their own and otherā€™s work to help them understand if it makes sense by adding, deleting and changing their sentences. Publish- My students publish through variety of mediums- SeeSaw, Blogs, Book creator. The more audience their work is exposed to the better their writing gets! This gives them the opportunity to reflect back on their work and receive constructive feedback from peers, parents and teachers. This is a life long skill that they need for all aspects of their lives and future careers. I wonder how often J.K Rowling edited her master piece? #thewritingprocess #skillsforlife #literacymatters #teachersofinstagram #iteachtoo #writingmatters #stage3teachers #sydneyteacher

- Working collaboratively with the leadership team, we focused on teaching processing skills of a text. Team teaching with Frances (our AP) has enabled me to provide thorough support in building these skills. One of our goals was to enhance their oral language skills by discussing the purpose of whole and parts of text. We worked with students to help them identify important key words in a text that would help them to understand the intended message. We use the gradual release of responsibility model approach (I do- we do - you do) to provide the students these skills. #literacymatters #skillsforlife #iteachtoo #stage3 #professionallearning #teachersofinstagram #evaluatepractice

- As part of a new school community with new learners, our main focus this term has been to aid students to become more literate. Throughout this term I engaged in a variety of in-depth professional discussions to promote literacy skills. Working with these two lovely ladies who are part of our leadership team, we have been able to construct a plan to ensure that we are providing skills to promote understanding in speaking and listening, reading and writing. These two ladies bring a wealth of experience that has enhanced my own practice. #professionallearning #professionalreflection #sydneyteacher #teachersofinstagram #nextgenerationlearning #iteachtoo #literacymatters #skillsforlife
