- 💜🦈💜 @Regranned from @sharkservation - Since it's #sharkawarenessday, we will be sharing images and personal messages from those involved with #sharkservation to celebrate all things sharks!!! 💙 . Let's begin with a photograph and message from @bunny_shark... "Unlike most shark lovers, my fascination with sharks stemmed from childhood fear. I had always been curious about the ocean and sharks, but I remember subconsciously thinking of the film Jaws whenever I went swimming! However, it wasn't until 7-8 years ago when I caught a glimpse of the brutal practice of shark finning on a documentary (approximately 70 million sharks are killed a year for their fins!!). From that moment my opinion of sharks changed completely - I watched all documentaries available, I read books and scientific articles, I was in awe watching videos of people swimming alongside sharks, and dreamed that one day I would do the same. I began to raise my voice about the misconceptions of sharks. I focused my studies on shark ecology and conservation, and eventually travelled to South Africa to come face to face with the great white shark - and now I've never looked back". 🦈 Stay tuned for more stories and images in celebration of #sharkawarenessday 😊 #sharkservation #sharklove #greatwhiteshark #shark #sharkweek - #regrann

- #Repost @brianskerry ・・・ Photo by @BrianSkerry Silhouette of an Oceanic Whitetip Shark in The Bahamas. A pelagic predator living in the open sea, the oceanic whitetip is especially efficient at hunting in these regions of ocean where finding prey can be far and few between. Listed as the ‘most abundant large animal on Earth' as recently as the 1970s this species numbers have been reduced by 99% and are on the verge of extinction today due to over fishing and the shark fin trade. My hope is that through photography, we can begin to see these animals in a new light and understand their vital role in the health of our planet. To see my favorite collection of shark images and read the stories of my personal experiences with these animals, check out my new book - SHARK - available wherever books are sold. #SharkAwarenessDay #mako #makoshark #sharks #savesharks #summerofsharks #SHARKTheBook #photooftheday

- A Mako Shark dives, open-mouthed, at photographer Brian Skerry (@BrianSkerry) in the waters off of New Zealand. Makos are one of the fastest fish in the sea, capable of speed bursts up to 60mph. Of all shark species they also have one of the largest brains, relative to body size. The numbers of Makos have declined worldwide due to overfishing and the demand for shark fins. They are currently listed as vulnerable, but their population continues to spiral downwards. Learn more about Makos in the August issue of National Geographic Magazine, @NatGeo, which includes a feature story about these impressive animals. And if you like sharks, check out the new book - SHARK - by @BrianSkerry and @NatGeo! - As the apex predators of the oceans, the role of sharks 🦈 is to keep other marine life in healthy balance and to regulate the oceans. The end of the sharks will mean the end of the line for many more marine species 🐠🐟🐡🐬🐋 #Repost @natgeopristineseas (@get_repost) ・・・ Shot by @manusanfelix_official | Did you know sharks have been in the ocean for over 400 million years? That's 100 million years before dinosaurs! But they are threatened now more than ever. It takes many shark species at least a decade to reach maturity, putting their population at severe risk of decline if humans continue to kill them before they have a chance to reproduce.
