- overall, a laid-back night with some spectacular songs and guests in tow. sarah silverman opened, and sean watkins and paul cartwright joined JB. elated to hear I'M GONNA SIT RIGHT DOWN AND WRITE MYSELF A LETTER (JB and SW, guitars), and EVERY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE (piano, PC violin). a long intro followed, and segued into what had the sound and feel of a new theme (perhaps for 'christopher robin'). it's a terrible beauty. later, JB insisted "it's on you," urging full audience participation after a GOOD VIBRATIONS request. it was the BEST sing along since last december's BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. incredible harmonies and theremin parts from the crowd, and great, thunderous playing from JB. at the end, both arms raised, fists clenched, JB let out a loud "f*ck yeah!" always ready to be transported when JB says "let's go gypsy jazz." despite no vocals, paul and JB made ANYTHING GOES the hottest hot club jazz delight. I DIED when JB fired up the synthi and burst into the pixies' GIGANTIC (synthi, vocoder, piano, violin). it was fantastic, and paul's deep, stark, bellowing riffs were lovely. even later, a lengthy request frenzy followed, with JB egging us on with teases of most of the requests. but, then he lit up the video screens and started what would be the highlight of the evening...a 20+ minute fever dream, stirring up notions of the wonkatania trip and the 2001 stargate, wrapped in a 'single wing turquoise bird' light show. a good 6-8 mins of mixing/looping preceded JB actually playing the show stopping one-two punch of cooke's BRING IT ON HOME TO ME, then dylan's JUST LIKE A WOMAN (piano, microkorg, drum machine, video). incorporating videos (HEEBIE GEEBIES, SONGS OF THE AUVERGNE) and video effects into a delirious pulsating, swirling phantasmagorical feast. checked out the audience, and they resembled the photos of the first 3D movie audiences, sheer shock and awe. upon returning to the stage, paul said "extraordinary," and, he wasn't wrong. it's definitely up there in the pantheon of video mixes. an indelible, transcendent moment, it was a marvelous reminder, magic lives here and now, not only in our dreams. 5/25/18 . #losangeles #jonbrion

- "I will fu*king Lemmy this sh*t if I have to!" ~ JB to his piano mic with "droopy mic syndrome"... fiddlesticks! until my MAGNOLIA score arrives, i must revel in the sweet memory of the alchemic musical reunion of JB and four string phenom, paul cartwright. for starters, went totes starkers for OVER OUR HEADS (piano and mircokorg, with a little vocoder action)...really so stunning. mid-set, charmed by an impromptu, angsty yet hilarious ode to the faulty mic stand (piano, microkorg, drum machine). then ravished by some audacious covers, including: RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL (celeste and viola), which started with the PEANUTS theme, then some SUGAR PLUM FAIRY and HARRY POTTER THEME for good measure), a faint but lovely SHE SAID (on celeste and violin...hurray, another mental request fulfilled!), and, of late, the perennial WATERLOO SUNSET (celeste and viola), heavy reverb on the viola midway enhanced its wistful loveliness, and was especially gorgeous as JB segued into SUNDAY MORNING with spontaneous dark, wicked lyrics, noting we wouldn't "hear that on the velvets box set." finally, lacking 2nd verse lyrics (and audience participation) JB abandoned ALL THE YOUNG DUDES (piano and viola) and started to righteously school us in our first official class in BOWIE 101 whereby JB and paul chronologically traversed the bowieverse, from an ultra spacey SPACE ODDITY (acoustic guitar, viola), to a bopping CHANGES (piano, viola), on to a lush and loud MOONAGE DAYDREAM (on a ferocious franken-fender tele and violin), with a fuzzy, dreamy LIKE A HURRICANE coda, finishing on an extra healthy dose of feedback, after which JB kicked his guitar away. the lesson ended on a striking ASHES TO ASHES (piano, violin, vocoder), heavy on reverb, had amazing tone and color. paul is mesmerizing to watch, as is JB (DUH), so, hopefully, he'll be back soon or at least have some little room sets this year. - still buzzing from the insanely great sets last friday night. it was an inferno of a main set, and once again, followed by a rip roaring little room set (mostly full of delicious standards). kumail nanjani kicked off the night with a sampling of his soon to be SNL monologue. watch it live or dvr it, you'll be pleased you did. JB soon followed, and was in a fine, upbeat mood. not much banter, as he let his hands and instruments do the talking, aided by several Gs. joined here and there by virtuosic violinist, paul cartwright, it was all killer, no filler. the kind of stuff of you write home about, the kind of night that leaves you in a daze. special guest, john wicks, jumped in to play a couple of THE RECORDS' songs. and, now i feel all giddy again. other major highlights: ANY MAJOR DUDE, PLAY THE GAME, SAME MISTAKES, and some bowie-licious covers CHANGES and ASHES TO ASHES, with paul providing some sterling accompaniment on both songs. towards the end of the main set, JB started to loop a song, and after a few drum beats at the start of the 2nd loop, i knew where he was going and more than eager to follow. from the drums to the synthi to the piano to a gretsch (which he played mostly ON. HIS.
