- #Repost @usinterior with @get_repost ・・・ On this day in 1919, #GrandCanyon National Park was established. Long before this #Arizona landmark became a #nationalpark, it was wowing visitors from all over with its awe-inspiring vistas. The Grand Canyon is a mile deep, 277 miles long and 18 miles wide. While @grandcanyonnps doesn’t include the entire canyon, it does measure in at a whopping 1,904 square miles. - #LAunforgotten TLDR: The things they dumped on their heads . #otd in #lalife and #lahistory a 1968 L.A. draftee showed up to his induction into the armed services and dumped a large bucket of blood (unknown source) over his head. The war opened up a fascinating new discourse about the masculine body. Previous generations of military psychologists during World Wars I and II called such behavior “malingering” and stigmatized the malingerer as less than a man. By Vietnam, gender norms had changed, for White, affluent men, who re-signified growing out hair, starving themselves, and doing physicals covered in shit, piss, and vomit. Transgressing these norms came as a practice that was situated solidly in the domain of social and cultural capital. Typically, the draft resister knew about someone else who had pulled off a similar stunt. And they had the privileged positionality that risking mental health diagnosis did not disadvantage them by blocking access to clubs or romantic liaisons. Indeed, the draft resister had more likely matriculated on campuses with slogans like “women say yes to men who say no.” Burning draft cards also burned bridges with unions that were often pro-war. So this bulge of college educated politically active men gravitated into free enterprise paths (like the new industry we now call “tech”). That said, I’d have shot a couple fingers off to stay out of Vietnam, but that says more about my class and race than my ideology. . . . #LA #LosAngeles #History #DraftCardBurner #Vietnam #Malingering #Resistance #WhitePrivilege #1968 #50yearsago #Abject
