- {BACK TO THE BASICS - MINDFULNESS} // It’s no secret that I’m a big proponent of Mindfulness, but just talking about how fabulous it is won't do us any good if we don’t understand WHAT it is, HOW to practice it and WHY it even matters. So, let’s review what we mean when we talk Mindfulness. • Mindfulness is the art of *paying attention*; it’s deciding to stop living life on autopilot, going through the motions, and acting from a place of numbness or habit. It’s deciding to be present: to be an active participant in our lives. Practicing Mindfulness means we *notice* thoughts, feelings and information without judgement- without evaluating, avoiding, suppressing or blocking our experience. Additionally, Mindfulness is being able to stay curious about the present without getting attached, mired in the past (rumination) or grasping for the future (anxiety). • Practicing Mindfulness involves training the brain to be a "compassionately detached" observer of our humanness. Meditation is a good place to start because it’s designed to reduce distraction while you practice being curious. However, the eventual goal is to translate this same awareness to everything we do: eating, socializing, even cruising around on our phones 😜. In that sense, Mindfulness becomes a lifestyle, rather than something we switch on and off. • So what’s the point of it all? Ultimately, it’s so we can show up for our lives in a healthy, vibrant, whole-hearted, self-compassionate and empathetic way. But when we break it down, robust research also shows that Mindfulness is good for our bodies (our hearts, immune systems, sleep), our minds (regulating distressing emotions, reducing stress and staving off depression), our brains (increases the density of gray matter in regions linked to learning and memory), and our relationships. It can help improve our ability to focus, fosters altruism and increases resilience and self-esteem. And those are just some of the benefits. Is Mindfulness a silver bullet? No, because engaging in and sticking with the practices requires dedication and consistency, but IT WORKS, and it’s free, and anyone can start, any time. In other words, why not give it a shot?

In fact, it's designed to do just that. Of course, the busier the world gets, the more information our brains constantly have to filter. It can leave us feeling overwhelmed and always pulled in a million directions. That's why mindfulness and meditation should be something we all strive to incorporate in our lives. Not just as another chore... But as an escape from our chores. Let's give our minds a break. Give ourselves a chance to swim in silence. Limit the constant sights and sounds filtering into our brains so that it can have a chance to rest, just as our muscles need rest. You'd be surprised at how the overwhelming, screaming influence of the world becomes a whisper when we allow it. And as soon as that noise dies down... We can start to listen to ourselves. Start to understand ourselves. Start to unlock the music of our souls. And, most important, let that music guide us in life.
