- I can't start a post about the highlights of my year without acknowledging the fact the 2017 sucked. There were so many times this year that I woke up to news that broke my heart, that made me angry, that sent me into despair and I just did not want to create. We all suffered this year and some more than others. It took more effort to find the good things about 2017, but I did find them. When I looked harder, I saw resistance, I saw people showing love and consideration for others, I saw people pushing themselves to learn about the world outside their own experiences. It was in those smaller quiet moments that I found hope. With all that said (and to make a long post longer) here are the highlights of my year in illustration: *January-I finalized my first portfolio of the year and updated my website. *February-I finished my first #matskidbook class my first taste of children's book illustration. *March-I got my highest liked and commented post on Instagram ever. Still. *May-I had my first published illustration in @theperpetualyou and I sent out my first children's book promo postcards. *June-This was the first summer I hired a nanny so that I could work on my illustrations. It felt good to invest in myself and my dream. *July-I attended @scbwi #la17scbwi and met some great people, heard so many good speakers (@vanessabrantleynewton @judyblume @sean_qualls @phamarama), learned so much, and solidified my dream of illustrating children's books. *August-I joined @svslearn at the recommendation of my friend @laurabobbiesi and grew even more in my skills and put together my first children's book portfolio. *September-I was featured on the @makeartthatsells blog and I attended #SCBWI San Francisco and South Bay Illustration Day and heard Dan Santat @dsantat speak. *October-Attended @scbwinortheastbay Oktoberfest and submitted my portfolio to the gallery for the first time and received honorable mention!!! I also had a very very helpful and productive portfolio critique from @leewhiteillo. *November-Finished my second #matskidbook course. *December-Sent out my second round of promotional materials to children's book publishers. Great way to end the year!

- Spent a long time trying to work over a thumbnail that just wasn't working. Finally started over and actually getting somewhere now 👏 Lucy Ruth Cummins gave excellent advice at #la17scbwi ☝️Don't hold onto a mistake just because it took a long time to make and ✌️ Fix the sketch! If something isn't working, don't wait until you get to final art to make it right.👏👏👏 I'm sure I butchered what she said exactly, but you get the idea 🙃 ... #kidlitartists #kidlitart #sketch #wip #scbwi

- I am so honored to work and play with this phenominal group of creators on the Board of Advisors for @scbwi — I'm continually inspired and learn so much from them all (and we laugh more than one ought to be allowed.) Here's our official Board photo from last week's meeting after the amazing LA Conference, with the magical @linoliver22 & @stephenmooser ! You may already see many wonderful people you recognize in there, but to see who's who, check out the list and bios on the SCBWI website: www.scbwi.org/about/board-of-advisors/ #la17scbwi
