- New work in progress. For a year I haven't been able to really write an artist statement about Coiled. When asked why I made the series, I gave polished answers. It's my first real, ongoing series since school in Chicago in 2013 but there's no glamorous inspiration. I started the series to deal with gaslighting and how it began to destroy my confidence. It's not about gaslighting, but that was the impetus. That's it. Womens' strength is often measured by how much pain they must endure, and that is not only disempowering, but psychologically abusive. And oh so tiring. Yet sometimes wonderful things come out of learning how to deal with disappointments. Detailed, almost neurotic drawings taught me patience and helped me to simply believe myself again. Not believe in myself, but just believe that my reality was real. I was regularly made to feel crazy, when I knew I wasn't. I was derided for suspecting someone of doing something that they were actually doing. It was hell and I still seek a truthful answer. So I retreated by drawing anything detailed and finally settled on hair. Every little hair was part of a pattern and it always yielded something cohesive at the end. The more I drew, the stronger and more confident I felt. Initially it was quiet and isolating, but by closing yourself off you can build yourself back up wholly. I then began applying this restraint and focus to the process of reclaiming my peace of mind. I began to write down everything I observed that someone tried to deliberately manipulate me into doubting. I silently resisted gaslighting by recalling and documenting these things with acute textual detail. The process of drawing cleared the haze and was the catalyst for psychological renewal, so that I could clearly see both telltale patterns and inconsistencies that I knew existed, but was told didn't. Life imitates art. It will all show a bigger picture in time. If we are made to doubt ourselves, we can resist silently, yet with profound strength and resolve. So yes, Coiled is a representation of black culture and the beauty of natural, textured hair of all sorts, of course. But its always been more just a fun hobby. It helped regain my sanity.
