- ...Staying awake watching tv alone till dawn when calm, American comedies came on I couldn’t sleep until I knew the good people were awake getting ready for a normal day The calm the daylight brings Clears my fear of the night Too scared to sleep until daylight I got a bar job 10pm- 6am Rolled up notes exchanged for bottles of WKD poured into plastic pint cups meant for beer For gays at a rave called Queer On The Pier... .................................................................................................................................. At 18, I completely lost my ability to exist. I became nocturnal for about a year to avoid the real world and people in it. I stayed up watching weird, late night educational programmes and drawing on the walls until some calming show like Fraser came on at 6 or 7 am when I would finally relax and fall asleep. I’d sleep through the day and wake up in time for The Simpson’s that evening. It was the worst year of my life, just thinking of it makes me feel sick. Discovering how to hide or be alone when your head and heart are stable is a beautiful thing. Discovering those things as a survival tactic is nothing but ugly.

- Dealing with Stress? Guess what, you are not alone. We all experience stress and anxiety from time to time. But do you know how our body handles stress? 📌 So the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is our central stress response system that defends our body against stress. HPA axis, a dynamic intertwining of the central nervous system and endocrine, works in a fairly straightforward manner. When our brain receives stress signals through our senses, hypothalamus interprets those signals and reacts by releasing corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). When CRH binds to CRF receptors on the anterior pituitary gland, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is released. ACTH binds to receptors on the adrenal cortex and stimulates adrenal release of most important anti-stress hormone - cortisol. 📌 In response to stressors, cortisol is released for several hours until it reaches a certain blood concentration, and at that point cortisol exerts negative feedback to the hypothalamic release of CRF and the pituitary release of ACTH – signalling it to stop releasing CRF & ACTH. Systemic homeostasis returns at this point. 📌 Without a properly functioning HPA axis and proper levels of cortisol output by the adrenals, the body will not be able to handle stress well. Excessive or chronic stress, however, can overburden the adrenals so that its hormonal output becomes dysregulated over time. In early stages of stress response, cortisol levels rise as the adrenals put out more anti-stress hormones to help return us back to normal. As stress increases and becomes persistent, cortisol output ultimately drops after maximum output is reached. The adrenals now are unable to keep up with the cortisol demand, leaving the body with symptoms such as low blood pressure, salt craving, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, panic attack, heart palpitations, reactive hypoglycemia, brain fog, low libido, paradoxical reactions, hypersensitivity to medications and supplements, and food sensitivities. 📌 Over the next couple of days we will delve deep into body’s functional response to stress, and also look into ways to effectively manage stress through lifestyle. 📌 #stress #cortisol #thinkingbeyondhealth
