- One of the cornerstones of @gainnutrition coaching isn’t anything to do with nutritional science. If you’re a client of mine or have attended one of my seminars, you’ll know that I place just as much value on habit change as I do on food prep and macronutrients. . My favourite method is @gretchenrubin’s Four Tendencies framework, which characterises the ways people respond to inner expectations (such as New Year’s resolutions) and outer expectations (such as work deadlines). . 🍎UPHOLDERS respond to both inner and outer expectations. . 🍎QUESTIONERS question all expectations, but only follow expectations they endorse (effectively turning all expectations into inner expectations). . 🍎OBLIGERS respond to outer expectations, but fail to meet expectations they set for themselves. . 🍎REBELS resist all expectations, outer and inner alike. . It’s amazing what this little bit of self-knowledge can do to the outcome of your goal-setting. If you’re an obliger, just knowing someone’s monitoring your progress produces never-before-seen results. If you’re a Questioner, having a coach there to answer your unending supply of queries helps maintain your focus. Upholders need less motivation, but they love the extra support and structure. As for Rebels, they hate to be told what to do. I let them take the information, outline the consequences of actions, and remind them that they always have a choice. . At the root of the Four Tendencies is a simple reminder to know yourself. Knowing yourself means you can change your behaviour. And once you can do that, whatever body composition, health, life or performance goal you have quickly becomes within reach. . Change your habits, change your life. Do you keep telling yourself that if only you would be thinner, richer, have a different job, or that special someone, that THEN you would feel so good and be worry free? Aka-postponing happiness and success into the future? . Lots of people are operating on the limiting belief that “if you don’t worry or stress out, you won’t be successful or make things happen” . That ego programming that we can only be at peace once everything is “in order” . If you relate, I invite you to zoom out and examine those beliefs for truth . Here is an example to demonstrate the point: say you want to loose weight. You noticed that you eat ten cookies every day and want to stop that. So you start to tell yourself “don’t eat the cookie, don’t eat the cookies” . And every day you use all your effort to not eat the cookie. You push upstream, you are so worried about eating the cookies...then something happens that’s stressful and you face-plant into the cookie jar for a three day bender . Why? Because all you been thinking about is COOKIE . What we focus on, expands. Focusing on the unwanted, creates the unwanted . Worry and stress are habits, and habits can be changed . Back to the example-imagine focusing on feeling good and relaxed, telling yourself that you are a good person, that you love eating vibrant fresh foods, and moving your body in lovely fun ways. You are feeling excited and relaxed about eating, because all you think about is feeling good, and what you are willing to do to feel good . You loose weight AND feel good along the way (no stress or worry) . It takes 66-365 days to truly make a new habit our new normal. Imagine what could all happen in this year if you started today to glorify peace instead of stress, trust instead of worry, and used your imagination to create inspired action towards your true desires? . Do not postpone your happiness any longer.
