- #janteacherchallenge part 2! Day 16: My College Me, jumping for joy on my graduation day (which was only 8 months ago????) As a college student, @umainefarmington was my home for 4 years. Now, as a teacher, I live 0.6 of a mile away from the campus....what can I say? Once a beaver, always a beaver! #universityofmainefarmington #liveumf #gobeavers #bpdi #getchomped #glorydays #iteach #iteachtoo #iteachmiddleschool #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #maineteacher #teacherlife

- It's hard to believe only a few years ago I was living in a camper with no electricity during the coldest winter on Iowa record. I had no real direction in life and that coupled with a very toxic relationship left me feeling very hopeless for my future and where it seemed to be going. At that time it really didn't seem worth sticking around for. In the fall of 2014 I sold everything I could, including my dirt bike, so I could afford to go back to school. In what was more or less a coin flip I chose to move to Bemidji so I could be closer to family and 8 hours away from the life I had in Iowa. I still didn't know what I wanted to study but I was hopeful at least starting in Environmental Studies would give me some ideas. Fortunately, in my first year I took a course in Hydrology and everything clicked. Suddenly I knew this was what I had always wanted to do and for the first time in many years I finally had real goals and direction in my life. Last week I started my first week of my graduate studies at Bemidji State and I'm already excited for the new opportunities that has brought. I also feel lucky to have crossed paths with my academic advisor, Dr. Miriam Rios-Sanchez, who has helped guide me along the way and introduced me to Geohydrology. I could not have done this or be where I'm at today without her guidance. I also want to say to anyone out there who is struggling in life just know you're always one decision away from a better life. Life is too short to spend it unhappy or surrounded by the wrong people. For me quitting drinking has been instrumental in changing every aspect of who I am. I can also credit my friendship with @littlestrikemusic for helping me find sobriety. There's a lot of truth to the universe sending the right people to be in your life at the right moment. To me it is amazing how much change and growth I have experienced over the past few years. I certainly never saw graduate school ever being an option or something I would choose for myself. But I can't imagine any other place I'd rather be than where I am right now. #BestDecisionEver #ImReadyToMakeLotsOfMoneyNow #BSUAlum #GoBeavers
