- This week’s Member’s Monday is first-year Julia Klukoff! Julia is a bass clarinetist from Cherry Hill, NJ. She is planning on majoring in English and French 🇫🇷. Here are some questions we asked her: How did you begin playing music? 🎹 I took piano lessons when I was 5, played recorder throughout elementary school, and then began playing the Bb clarinet in 4th grade. How long have you been playing your instrument? 🎼 6 years on Bb clarinet, 5 on the bass clarinet. What was the first song you learned to play? Hot Cross Buns probably Who inspires you to play and why? 🎶 My uncle is a professional clarinetist and works at the New York Music Library in Queens, NY. He also plays in a Jewish klezmer group called The Shul Band, affiliated with the Shul of New York, a reconstructionist synagogue. He inspires me to play because he seems to have so much fun with what he does, and even though I'm not going into music, it's inspiring to have someone to show me that it's not a "useless" major. What is your favorite piece to play or listen to? 🎧 My favorite piece to listen to is Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, complete with the cannons! Who is your favorite composer and why? 🖋 Clara Schumann. I did a project about her in my music theory class senior year and I completely fell in love with her Romances. Not to mention that her work is often erased or misattributed to her husband Robert, AND she had a love affair Brahms. Pretty cool.
