- My final everyday typography tip in this mini series: pay attention to your alignment.⠀ ⠀ Alignment in typography deals with how the text is aligned on the page--left aligned, centered, right aligned or justified are a few ways most people are familiar with. Left aligned text provides a clear, solid line for the reader's eye to follow. Though many people think of centered alignment as "balanced" it's best reserved for titles, as the uneven lines of text can be difficult to track with the eye. Right aligned text also provides a solid line for the reader's eye to follow, but is typically reserved for quotes.⠀ ⠀ But alignment isn't just about how the text lines up on the page--it's also about how the text lines up with the other elements on the page. Does the edge of the text line up with the edge of the picture? Does the phone number line up with the icon? The goal is to use alignment to create a structured, organized design that is easy for the reader to navigate.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #everydaydesign #principlesofdesign #goodcommunication ⠀ ⠀

- Everyday typography tip number 4: Think about readability.⠀ ⠀ Readers won't read your blog post, your advertisement, or your webpage if it takes too much effort to do so. ⠀ - Make sure you use fonts that are easy to read--display fonts are great in large headlines, but reading an entire paragraph in a curly font can be tiresome.⠀ - Use colors that allow the text to stand out from the background (unlike my post picture).⠀ - Make sure your fonts are large enough to be easily read by your audience.⠀ ⠀ #everydaydesign #principlesofdesign #goodcommunication #goodadvertising ⠀

- Taking a break from my everyday typography posts: It's another #thankfulthursday , and today I'm thankful for all the things that make me feel alive! ⠀ ⠀ There's so much in life to be enjoyed, but there are some things that make me feel like I'm living with every fiber of my being. Like the excitement of learning a new skill (like how to transfer my physical watercolor work into digital form), or the joy of recognizing the birds in the trees and the grasses growing along the roadside. It's the feeling I get when I hear the stirring strains of a touching piece of music, or when I feel enveloped by the wilderness. It's the thrill of crafting a brilliant analysis or seeing a design go from a scratch-paper doodle to a physical creation.⠀ ⠀ What makes you feel alive?⠀ ⠀ #feelsoalive #gladtobealive #happytobeliving #thanksgiving2017 #monthofthanks

- Everyday typography tip three: Use distinction in your typography to guide your readers through your paper, business card, or any other design.⠀ ⠀ Newspapers back in the day used to have headlines that seemed at least 6 inches tall--there was no question what was supposed to catch the reader's eye. Below that there was often a smaller, though still bold font, elaborating on the details of the headline. Finally there was the body of the article, in small, neat text. Now, isn't that easy to navigate? The largest and most prominent text catches the eye first, and we work our way through to the smaller text. Size isn't the only way to guide readers--you can make use of different fonts, or use bold or italic styles or color to show your readers how to navigate through your design. The easier it is for them to pick out key details, the more likely they are to actually pick them out!⠀ ⠀ #everydaydesign #principlesofdesign #goodcommunication #goodadvertising ⠀ ⠀

- Everyday typography tip number two: Don't use too many fonts!⠀ ⠀ I love different fonts--I've been known to spend an hour pouring over gorgeous fonts, looking for the right one for my project. But you have to resist the urge to use all your favorite fonts in one project. Too many fonts can make a design feel overwhelming and disorganized--not to mention the fact that it adds an extra burden on loading time if you're designing a web page. As a rule it's best to use no more than three different fonts in a design. The only time you really want to see a huge conglomeration of fonts is in a design meant to be used as art alone.⠀ ⠀ #everydaydesign #principlesofdesign #goodcommunication #goodadvertising ⠀ ⠀

- As I've worked as a graphic designer, I've been in so many situations that have made me realize the importance of understanding graphic design principles for so many professions. Whether you create content for a blog, or you're running an after-school children's program, anytime you're creating visual content for people, you run into principles of graphic design. In a way, the pervasive principles of graphic design are all about good communication. And there's no graphic design principle as pervasive as TYPOGRAPHY (one of my favorites!)⠀ ⠀ So, I'll be running a small series of posts that highlight some of the most important principles of good typography (essentially the use of type). These will be principles that can be applied to just about any profession. Enjoy!⠀ ⠀ Principle One: Fonts have personalities, use one that sends a message in line with your message--whether that's "I'm a well-established realtor" or "We're a super laid-back and fun children's program!"⠀ ⠀ #typography #principlesoftypography #goodtypography #everydaygraphicdesign

- Don't forget that this is your last chance to enter to win my "Thankful" printable for free! Go to my "grateful giveaway" post, like it, and tag a friend to enter.⠀ ⠀ Now, on to today's post! On this #thankfulthursday I'm grateful for my phone. Just kidding! It's not just my phone, but really all the tools we have today that allow me to stay connected to the people that matter most to me. When I was a missionary, I wasn't able to call home--not when I had a bad day, not when I was trying to make a decision, and not when I was feeling down. While that experience helped me grow more independent and taught me to rely on God, it also taught me to truly appreciate being able to connect to the people I love. In an instant I can call my mom and hear her voice. With a few taps on the screen I can share the antics of my kitten with my sister. Though hundreds of miles away, I was getting minute by minute updates on the birth of my first niece. Aren't we so blessed to live in a time when distance doesn't have to separate us?⠀ ⠀ What are you grateful for?⠀ ⠀ #thanksgiving2017 #monthofthanks #monthofgratitude #gratefulforfamily #whatareyougratefulfor

- Hey there! I figured I'd introduce the person behind the wedding invitations, nature pics and random illustrations.⠀ 1) My name is Bromwyn--and introducing myself in a noisy venue is the worst, because no one can understand my name. "Did you say Ramen, like the noodles?" "Your name is Brumble?" True story.⠀ 2) I'm not a fan of social media. I don't feel the drive to browse my Instagram or Facebook feed. I struggle with posting.⠀ 3) I'm an extroverted introvert. I can have a conversation with random people in the grocery store line, but I hate parties where you're just expected to "mingle."⠀ 4) I'm kind of a private person--sharing details of my life on social media seems daunting!⠀ 5) I'm a bit of a typography nut. Some people collect shoes, some people get excited for new phones, but I'm excited about fonts! I can spend an hour perusing font websites looking at all the gorgeous angular fonts and I might have downloaded several random handwritten fonts for no reason...⠀ 6) I'm a list maker. When I think of something I need to do, I have to write it down--otherwise I'm constantly worrying and reminding myself not to forget. Nope, I'm all about write it down, get it out of my head and check my list!⠀ 7) Final random, random fact: I loved dragons growing up. I even dressed as one for Halloween when I was little. When all the other parents told my mom "She looks so cute!" I quickly retorted, "I'm not cute, I'm ferocious!"⠀ ⠀ Nice to meet you! What's a fun random, random fact about you?⠀ ⠀ #introduction #personbehindtheart #nicetomeetyou #aboutme ⠀ ⠀

- Ok fellow #etsyshopownersofinstagram, how do you go about shipping your small-ish items? I always use the flat-rate boxes at the post office, since the price is consistent and it's guaranteed to arrive within 3 days. But occasionally I have tiny orders--like this order of 25 business-card-sized temple sealing invitation inserts--and $7.50 for an oversized box stops feeling so handy.⠀ ⠀ Any suggestions? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #etsyshipping #etsyshopproblems s #creativecommunity #communityovercompetition #creativesofinstagram ⠀ ⠀

- I'm sure I'm not the only one whose thoughts turn to gratitude during the month of November. But this year, I'm trying to really take the time to think about what I'm grateful for.⠀ ⠀ On this #thankfulthursday I'm thankful for kittens! Just kidding--kind of. It's just that the kittens I raised this summer represent a lot of things that I'm grateful for this year. I'm thankful for little unexpected blessings that bring me joy and purpose when I'm feeling down. I'm thankful for opportunities to practice kindness, patience and compassion. I'm thankful for love--the love that can inspire me to put myself aside, and the love that others give me. ⠀ ⠀ What are you grateful for this Thursday?⠀ ⠀ #monthofgratitude #monthofgratitude2017 #whatareyougratefulfor #attitudeofgratitude ⠀ ⠀

I& #39;m thankful for love--the love that can inspire me to put myself aside, and the love that others give me. ⠀ ⠀ What are you grateful for this Thursday?⠀ ⠀ #monthofgratitude #monthofgratitude2017 #whatareyougratefulfor #attitudeofgratitude ⠀ ⠀
- I'm sure I'm not the only one whose thoughts turn to gratitude during the month of November. But this year, I'm trying to really take the time to think about what I'm grateful for.⠀ ⠀ On this #thankfulthursday I'm thankful for kittens! Just kidding--kind of. - I’ve been in a bit of a design dearth of late. First I was sick with bronchitis, then I moved houses, and finally cut hours at my day job have me sending out applications and searching for new opportunities. All in all, my creative juices felt as withered as an autumn leaf. But today, talking with @tsteeboutique at Superior Printing and Design, listening to her ideas and working with her to figure out her next course of action for her new business, I felt my old excitement and energy stirring at last! Thanks for coming in today Tierney—it made me feel more creatively alive than I have in a while 🙂 - Be sure to check out @tsteeboutique ’s cute shirts! #digitalmockup #graphictees #originalart #creativity #communityovercompetition
