- Today I went to the store to buy a spool of ribbon for a project, and ended up battling mobs of ladies on craft highs taking advantage of a "Doorbuster Veterans Day Sale." . This might not be a politically correct thing to say, but I'm just going to say it- today is a strange day for me. It's a combination of pride and pain. Gratitude and misunderstanding. There is a weird mix of appliance sales for the masses and patriotic radio blips. Restaurants give discounts and meals, but all too often veterans are still serving (either in a civilian job or still in the military) to enjoy them. Saying "thank you for your service" seems like the right thing to do, but also no where near enough (go see the movie, btw- it was accurate and real). We want to say thank you, but we don't really know how. So we say it in ways that makes US feel good. . Don't get me wrong- I love this country, and am thankful for it. I love my veteran and am thankful for him. I love my fellow military families and am thankful for them. And I love the civilians that support us and I'm thankful for them. . But I do feel that I might be time for a shift. A shift away from "everyone get a new washer and new Christmas decorations at 25% off!" to fixing the VA system. A shift from posting political opinions online to being involved in local politics. A shift from not just offering a veteran a free drink on one day to giving a free meal on a day they choose (so they can actually use it when they have a day off). Heck, maybe let their spouse have a free drink too, because goodness knows they'd like one, too. . Please understand that this is isn't coming from a heart that is complaining or ungrateful. I'm not accusing or judging or pointing fingers saying "that's not the right way to say thank you!" I'm coming from a place that is acknowledging that we are all in this together, and we are all trying to figure this out as best we can. And it's hard. War is hard. Military life is messy. Scars are painful. But pain isn't the enemy. I wanted to share my perspective, and I want to hear yours, too, because everything starts with listening. .
