I’ve always loved letters, I think they’re a special breed of magic. A picture can capture what a moment looks like, but letters can hold onto thoughts and hopes and multiple moments in time. I pull this letter out every year around the holidays. My grandma sent it to me over 16 years ago. In it she talks about my brother and my parents and my aunt. For the most part she just mentions ordinary every day little things and whenever I read it I remember her in a way that I’m not normally capable of. There’s just something about seeing the cursive words she took the time to write by hand. At the bottom of it all is a recipe for a very special apple pie. I now make this pie every Thanksgiving. She hasn’t been here to celebrate Thanksgiving with us for a long time, but I think she’d be happy to know that I still make her pie and reread this old letter. This note also reminds that sometimes the smallest things make the tiniest impact. When she wrote this note I don’t think she had any idea that two years later she’d be gone, or that out of all the things of hers I kept, this brief little letter became the item I treasured most. ❤️
