- #MeToo. ⠀
.⠀
I typed this as a tweet last night and just stared at it for twenty minutes, unable to hit send. I thought I’d moved past the shame of my memories, a part of my story that I’d shoved into a tiny little manageable box, a move that allowed me to convince myself I wasn’t affected at all by something that happened so long ago. “The stories of others are so much worse, so much more damaging,” I’d say to myself. “I don’t feel ashamed or affected or hurt now, in fact I barely think about it all, so why feel the need to share?” These are how my rationalizations go. ⠀ .⠀ But staring at that tweet, realizing just how afraid I was to share the words, realizing that my story is one that I’ve only really, truly shared with less people than I can count on one hand… that showed me that there IS still shame there, shame that I maybe wanted to pretend didn’t exist. ⠀ .⠀ Seeing the sheer VOLUME of stories and messages with the tag #metoo both breaks my heart and adds to my courage. It reminds me that the issues of sexualization are systematic. They begin so young and they only change form and re-emerge as power and career dynamics and adulthood bring about new opportunities for them to exist. ⠀ .⠀ I’m not here to share the details of my story, and I don’t think you should have to either. But I also don’t want to let this opportunity pass me by — an opportunity to be a little bit brave while so many other women are being brave too. An opportunity to say these things didn’t damage me or break me or hold me back, but they DID actually happen and they don’t belong in a box that I can pretend doesn’t exist. ⠀ .⠀ Me too, and most likely some of you too, and it’s okay for us to talk about it, and (even if it feels uncomfortable) it’s okay for us to think about it because only by acknowledging it and lifting our voices do we show the world the real magnitude of the problem. ⠀ . ⠀ The problem is real, the problem exists, the problem is massive, and our experiences shouldn’t be minimized or erased because of the fear/threat of making other people uncomfortable. ⠀ .⠀ Written by someone who is feeling, in this moment, just the tiniest bit braver than she is terrified. 💗👊

- Back in 2013, I distinctly remember sitting on the terrible shag carpet of our upstairs guest-room-turned-home-office when Jason said: “I’ve decided to shut down IWearYourShirt. I can’t pay you anymore.” (Well, I’m sure he said it a little nicer than that, but you get the idea.)⠀ .⠀ For the previous two years I’d been running operations for his marketing company and the business was supporting both of us. But in that moment, I knew everything was going to change. ⠀ .⠀ With $100,000 in debt from his company and no savings to fall back on, I felt I had two options: go back to the advertising world that I’d left (& hated) and find a job at a company OR try starting my own business from scratch with no professional design (or business) experience.⠀ .⠀ The voice in my head was screaming “You’re NOT ready for this!” ⠀ .⠀ Stretched out before me was this foggy haze of uncertainty and possible failure, which made me feel like I was tiptoeing out onto a high wire with no safety net below me. ⠀ .⠀ But there was a tiny whisper in my heart that said: “This is your chance to see what you’re capable of. This moment is inviting you to a life that you keep dreaming is possible. Why don’t you just take the invitation.” ⠀ .⠀ The truth is, I *wasn’t* ready. I *wasn’t* experienced. I didn’t know how I was going to make it work. ⠀ .⠀ But here is what I learned in saying YES: There's magic in the COMMITMENT. ⠀ .⠀ Something happens when you go all in on YOU and you say, I WILL figure this out. ⠀ .⠀ Jason and I will be the first to tell you, there are no guarantees with BuyOurFuture. It isn’t an overnight cure for your business or a dream-granting magical genie. But trust me, there IS magic in your commitment to it. ⠀ .⠀ There is so much real, tangible momentum in you saying, I will make this investment now because my future self is inviting me to a life that’s even richer and more joyful than the one I’m living now. ⠀ . ⠀ If you're ready to dive in, today is the last day. Head here to join us and SAY YES to the invitation: ➡️ BuyOurFuture.com (link in profile)

- Doubts are inevitable when you're a creative business owner, especially one with a self-taught skill (like oh, say, design or hand-lettering or art 🤷‍♀️😉)...but @jasondoesstuff has taught me an incredibly important lesson about listening to those doubts: they are usually based on ASSUMPTIONS. They are usually based on our worst possible answer to the question, What if?⠀ . ⠀ So when I find myself in a moment of doubt, I simply ask myself: is this based on something I KNOW to be true? Or is this simply based on an assumption I'm making out of fear? If it's the latter, then it's wasting my time and energy when I could be DOING something that will actually give me real feedback and real experience, not assumptions. ⠀ . ⠀ If you're in that space right now where your fears are taking over and your assumptions are making you doubt yourself, I just want to hit home the fact that the #BuyOurFuture community is full of people that are dreamers AND doers. This is a group that encourages one another to stop making assumptions and start getting *experiences* so you can learn. ⠀ . ⠀ If that sounds like the kind of group that could help you muster the courage to get over your own doubts, definitely consider joining us before BuyOurFuture closes tomorrow! - Last week was a tough one. Though I wasn't personally affected by the events in Las Vegas, that kind of mass tragedy and loss -- and the fact that it KEEPS happening -- hit me particularly hard. These feelings were made even messier as I watched the media and the online world seem to bounce back so quickly, like our collective processing of events like these is so well-practiced by now that our response time is getting shorter and shorter. And, honestly, that makes me so sad.⠀ . ⠀ Of course I don't want to sink into emotions like sadness and grief and anger... but I also don't want to forget. Or brush it aside. Or accept that these tragedies are "normal." They're not. ⠀ .⠀ So how do we still let joy and light into our lives while giving ourselves permission to also grieve and be sad? I don't know the answer for everyone, but for me the answer is TIME. I need time to make sense of it, to wade through it, to make space for emotions that are more than one-dimensional. That to me is what healing looks like -- not pretending something didn't happen, but giving your sense of being the time it needs to repair and renew and recalibrate. ⠀ . ⠀ So last week I took some time away to process these complex feelings. Away from Instagram. Away from Twitter (I didn't always succeed but the distance really helped). And @jasondoesstuff and I pressed pause on our #BuyOurFuture launch. That gave me enough space to do the gradual processing that's so key for me. I wrote my reps in Congress, did some research on current gun control legislation, and devoted extra awareness to gratitude.⠀ . ⠀ What I guess I'm just trying to share is, there's no right or wrong way to process things. I certainly am not here to judge anyone for their process. But if you're a sensitive soul like me and all of this is still sitting on your heart, take some time to heal. Let yourself press pause on whatever you need to so you can sort through it all. ⠀ .⠀ #BuyOurFuture has resumed with the deadline extended to this Friday. For any families that have been directly affected by recent events, please know I acknowledge how much more deep healing is on the road ahead for you. My 💗 (AND actions) are with you.

- With our love AND our action. With our grief and our resolve. With our outrage and our compassion. . Things will not get better unless we MAKE them better. I'm tired of waking up to heartbreak. . Thinking of those families affected by this tragedy (and all affected by gun violence.) It has to stop. Carving out time today to get educated on the gun-related bills before congress and will make my voice heard. The "activists" will not do it for us. They will not save us. WE are the activists and we have to save ourselves and each other. 💔#guncontrol

Carving out time today to get educated on the gun-related bills before congress and will make my voice heard. The "activists" will not do it for us. They will not save us. WE are the activists and we have to save ourselves and each other. 💔#guncontrol
- You may have seen in my Stories that I'm working on a custom canvas this weekend in between #BuyOurFuture launch tasks. One of my favorite parts of using my #iPadPro is the fact that I can take an existing piece and "test drive" a few concepts in @procreateapp before I bring them to the canvas. I can paint in the app and when I like a direction I'm going in, I'll go back to the studio to bring that inspiration to life. (For instance, I really love the shape layer I added at the end of the video, but I might have been hesitant to go all in on that concept on the canvas itself.) ⠀ . ⠀ I love working back and forth between "big" (canvas) and "small" (digital) -- each one has its advantages and joyful aspects and the combo keeps me coming back to a piece with a new perspective. ⠀ . ⠀ One of these days I will do a digital painting workshop because I know many of you have asked what my process is, what brushes I love, etc!⠀ .⠀ I'll be sure to post the final piece when it's finished so you⠀ can see how my vision ends up in "real life!" 😉👍🎨⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #carveouttimeforart #arttimelapse #artstudio #studioscenes #processvideo #timelapse #choosemust #risingtidesociety #dreamersanddoers #peoplescreative #makersmovement #liveauthentic #bloomyellow #makersgonnamake #madetomatter #creativelife #bigmagic #creativepreneur #communityovercompetition #theimperfectboss #soulfulcreative #lovewarrior #soulshare #acrylicart #abstractart #makingmarks

- #AbstractAffirmationsDaily / Break the pattern.⠀ .⠀ Every so often I find myself in a creative rut, and when that happens, I know this is exactly what I have to do. I take a look at all the routines and patterns I'm in, ask myself which ones are NOT working for me, and then I switch it up.⠀ .⠀ Patterns are comfortable. They're easy. They require no discipline for our brains because the repetition has us on autopilot and we don't have to make any decisions or muster up an awareness of our actions. But after a while, comfort becomes like a numbing agent for our creative impulses. Without novelty or challenges or new stimuli, insights and inspiration are harder to come by.⠀ .⠀ So whether it's scrolling through Twitter first thing in the morning (I don't recommend this 😬); or convenient ways you distract yourself from your work; or bad habits that keep you in that numbing place...break the pattern. - #AbstractAffirmationsDaily "Quit acting like there's a finish line." / Advice to myself (isn't it always.) ⠀ . ⠀ Sometimes I fall back into old habits and operate as though I'm looking for ONE magical solution where life and cretivity and business all come together in to the perfect mix and THEN I'LL BE DONE! I'll pat myself on the back for figuring it out, for getting to the finish line and then I'll just crack open a cold LaCroix and call it a day. ⠀ .⠀ Um.... turns out life isn't designed like that! We're always changing, our circumstances are always changing, and we have to evolve. So whether it's your business or your life, remember that it's a JOURNEY. The whole thing goes on. We never actually arrive. That will help you (and me!) remember to take more time to make sure we're enjoying the process, rather than focusing on "finding" that magical destination or finish line where things are easy. The journey IS the destination. ⠀ . ⠀ And I hope you like the process video. I wanted to show you what I've been doing lately which is to start some colors and gestures in my sketchbook and then bring it to the iPadPro to digital finish the painting and add lettering. (Also learning to work in Adobe Sketch with Procreate because in Sketch I can use my favorite Photoshop brushes!) DM if you have questions about digital painting. Remember I have an #iPadLetteringforBeginners course for $45 where I take you through my WHOLE process step by step. Remember, the course is also available with #BuyOurFuture which is currently open! ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #handlettering #lettering #digitalart #digitalpainting #creativesketchbook #procreate #abstractart #thehappynow #digitalart #choosemust #liveyourtruth #risingtidesociety #dreamersanddoers #peoplescreative #makersmovement #liveauthentic #bloomyellow #makersgonnamake #madetomatter #creativelife #bigmagic #creativepreneur #communityovercompetition #theimperfectboss #soulfulcreative #lovewarrior #soulshare

- Tell me if any this rings a bell, fellow creatives: When you’re in a “busy season” (which, eh-hem, feels like ALWAYS) you stop prioritizing things like exercise, health and self-care… ⠀ .⠀ You to get your business to a place of financial stability and to grow, but all that hustling and creating and analyzing often leaves you burnt out and exhausted… ⠀ .⠀ You crave more time for rest and travel and reading and stillness and walks and creativity and fun and family (🙌) but there’s just never any TIME after the to-do list is tended to. ⠀ .⠀ I know these things because I experience them too. ⠀ . ⠀ For one thing, I love my work and it’s easy for me to get caught up in it. But we ⠀ also live in a society that values DOING and ACHIEVING and raises that up as a clear priority over BEING and LIVING. For so many entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs, life is what happens in between the cracks of work. But that’s no way to truly live. ⠀ . ⠀ Years ago, @jasondoesstuff and I made a promise to ourselves that we would make an intentional effort to prioritize LIVING. We decided that instead of bending our lives to fit the work we do, we would identify the full life we want to lead and use our businesses and our work to fuel and feed that life. ⠀ . ⠀ Tomorrow (9/28) at 10am PST we want to share with you 4 action steps that we use to reconnect with this intention and come back to our core values on a regular basis. To register, head to ➡️ buyourfuture.com/working⠀ ⠀ . ⠀ Listen, when you love your work I know it’s hard. It brings you joy to keep striving, keep putting in the hours, keep trying to move the needle. And that’s great! But it shouldn’t be at the expense of living out your core values. You CAN make time for family and travel and rest… you just have to learn how to prioritize them. ⠀ . ⠀ Because honestly, what is it all FOR if not to live our best lives? Our best work starts with being our best selves. Come hang with us tomorrow and let’s recommit to working to LIVE, rather than living to work!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #thehappynow #digitalart #choosemust #liveyourtruth #risingtidesociety #dreamersanddoers #peoplescreative #makersmovement #bloomyellow #makersgonnamake #madetomat

- When others are hurting, I'm hurting. It's the occupation hazard of being a sensitive soul in a tumultuous world. In times like these, it's enough to make you want to curl up in a ball or just ignore what's happening altogether because it's all too much and it's all too hard. ⠀ . ⠀ But this oft-used phrase by @glennondoyle helps me when my heart feels so heavy from the hurting I see around me. This phrase helps me move my focus from that feeling of helplessness for those in pain -- like our friends in dire circumstances in #PuertoRico, or those being misrepresented for peacefully protesting injustice, or those that are sick and feeling uncertain about the future of their healthcare -- to a feeling of love for the ties that binds us. It reminds me that the only reason I feel that pain so deeply is because we are all connected through our shared humanity. And while it may be easier to ignore what's going on and go about our daily lives without the weight of it all, that's not what people who belong to each other do. And that's not what I, as a person who has power and water and a home and access to resources, feel I can do. ⠀ . ⠀ So when I repeat these words to myself, it's usually the shift I need to move out of helplessness and into hope and action. We can't fix everything, but we can do something instead of nothing. We can raise our hands and say "How can I help?"⠀ .⠀ That said, Jas and I will be donating to relief efforts through Glennon's non-profit #TogetherRising because 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the people. (Honestly I always clam up when considering where to donate, but gifting something to an organization I trust is the way I've decided to give, rather than to be paralyzed by it all.) When I put myself in the shoes of someone who has potentially lost their home, access to water and food and medication, I like to believe that there might be people out there looking for ways to come to my aid in the spirit of belonging to one another. #HelpPuertoRico ⠀

- Coming off of a weekend in Florida for a close friend's Bachelorette and it reminds me how important it is to take time out, go offline, and have some fun with friends -- even in the midst of a "busy" season. ⠀ . ⠀ #BuyOurFuture is opening back up tomorrow (😱) so @jasondoesstuff and I have had a lot of things to think about and check off of our to-do lists these past weeks. In the past I may have convinced myself that flying across the country a weekend before a big launch just wasn't feasible. But thankfully, time has taught me a few things about what is important and how to make time for the things you value, even if at first glance it seems like you're "too busy." I've learned that often the times I think I don't have time for fun or rest or friendship is often when I need it the most. ⠀ .⠀ I've also learned over time that friendship and maintaining strong connections with a few close friends is worth investing in. I was so happy to spend time celebrating @brittkf and it allowed me to fill up my tank with laughter and joy before the next two action-packed weeks. ⠀ . ⠀ Moral of the story for my soulful creative entrepreneurs out there: there's is SO much more to life than work, but you have to make the time for it. ⠀ .⠀ Britt, I had SO much fun with you this weekend and I can't wait to celebrate again in December. Thanks for being such a generous, bubbly, thoughtful friend. Love you!

- Traveling to Florida this weekend and I just flew over the Colorado River. I'm staring out the window marveling at the grandeur of the world below. We seem to be flying over a remote area of mountains at the moment, and yet I see roads everywhere. For the first time ever, this observation makes me pause in awe of the ingenuity of humans. We built roads THERE? How did we do that? How did we figure out how to get this gargantuan hunk of metal carrying hundreds of people to soar anywhere in the world? How did we invent technology to allow me to type this to you and connect with you from 20,000 feet above the earth? . But marveling at all man has *achieved* sparks a new insight for me this time. This time looking around all we've invented only serves as a stark contrast to the REAL problems we've yet to solve -- problems of the soul. Feeling like we're more divided than ever. Unkind to each other. Fearful of one another. Ignoring our catastrophic impact on our planet, our home. It just makes me wonder: for a species that has advanced knowledge SO far, how can we still have so much yet to learn? . That's when I remember we're in a system that values achievement above *alignment.* We focus our attention OUTSIDES ourselves - to grow, to build, to expand to new frontiers. Commercialism and technology and civilization all aim to say "We are the best. Look at all we've achieved." . But what if instead of the BEST, we were focused on being the most honest? Most kind? Most true to our diverse and independent roots? What if we valued building roads within us, to our true selves, and to one another? . I'm not saying innovation is evil. I'm grateful for modern conveniences. All I'm saying is that I think we'd do well to redistribute a bit of that enterprising spirit when it comes to progressing our hearts too. . Give me alignment over achievement every time. 💗 #thoughtsfromtheair

- Do as I say not as I do, right? 💁 Listen, the hardest part about creating a community who expects inspiring content from you is that when you're not living out that wisdom every single day, you feel like a total fraud. (Like... when I realized I had too much on my plate this week and had a mini-meltdown, complete with tears, on Tuesday night.)⠀ . ⠀ In those tough moments where I've drifted away from my center, I try to remind myself that this community isn't just built on inspiration, it's built on AUTHENTICITY and truth. And the truth is that being a human is hard most of the time. Trying to juggle life and growth and business and creativity is a delicate dance, one I'm learning more about every day (and will continue to learn about.)⠀ . ⠀ So while I may not always follow my own advice to a tee, eventually I always come back to it and it reconnects me to what feels good. ⠀ . ⠀ If you're working toward your brightest life, be kind to yourself. Know that you won't always keep up with the habits and practices that keep you the most centered, vibrant version of yourself. When that happens, instead of beating yourself up, just come back to what you know and what makes you thrive. Let's all encourage each other to be more real, more honest, and more vulnerable because it's through true vulnerability that we allow ourselves to feel seen and loved. ⠀ .⠀ ps. Thanks to @ashley.beaudin at #theimperfectboss movement who continues to encourage us all to stay honest and show a move vulnerable side in the midst of our respective hustles. :) @imperfectbosses

- When faced with one really big, focus-intensive task or project, my personality type tends to go all in on that one thing. It's like I use every ounce of energy and discipline and attention I have to do the mental gymnastics necessary to complete that one thing. The problem with this is that when I go all in on one thing, just about every other area in my life starts to get way off balance. I stop doing all the things every day that bring me joy, and I fall out of practice with the habits I've worked so hard to cultivate: gratitude, creativity, fitness, connection with others. ⠀ . ⠀ Now my way of justifying this usually is to tell myself "It'll be better when..." I convince myself if I can just make it to the end of the gargantuan task, that I can rebalance the scales and make up for all the lost time because I have more energy and discipline to do so. ⠀ . ⠀ But here's the problem with this big fat lie...⠀ . ⠀ When we do that, not only are we POSTPONING JOY (ie. depriving ourselves of all the things that feel good in the present moment), but the really dangerous part is that we actually form new bad habits that make it that much harder to pick up with the good ones when we "make it to the other side." ⠀ . ⠀ Thinking on this, I remembered a newsletter I wrote earlier this year on this very topic. (You can read it using the link in my profile - just click this photo to head to the article.)⠀ . ⠀ It was a needed reminder in my own words NOT to allow myself to do this. Not to let everything else suffer, even when I am in a season of focus. Those are often the times we need to sustain ourselves with all those important self-sustaining practices the MOST. ⠀ . ⠀ Don't wait for this "season of stress" to pass before you re-commit to your self-care. Make the time. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #handlettering #lettering #digitalart #handletteredart #abstractart #thehappynow #digitalart #choosemust #liveyourtruth #risingtidesociety #dreamersanddoers #peoplescreative #makersmovement #liveauthentic #bloomyellow #makersgonnamake #madetomatter #creativelife #bigmagic #creativepreneur #communityovercompetition #theimperfectboss #soulfulcreative #lovewarrior #soulshare
