- I was almost finished drafting #HuntingPrinceDracula when I started getting really sick with Lyme. During edits and revisions I'd hit such a horrific low with my health, I was petrified about how HPD would be received. When I got the news it reached one month on the NYT tonight, I broke down and sobbed (and sobbed and sobbed). Thank you so much for ALL of your support, to say this is a dream come true would be a lie--I never even dared to dream so big. Thank you a thousand million times. Cheers to books about girls going after their dreams, no matter what the world has to say about it. πŸ’•

- Unfortunately, due to my ongoing battle with chronic Lyme disease and the way flare-ups render me disabled, I will not be attending this weekend’s Texas Teen Book festival as planned. Which breaks my heart to say, as I’ve been looking forward to it for months. I’m so upset that I have to miss it, and miss meeting each of you in person. I know you’ve been looking forward to it as much as I have been, and I’m truly sorry to disappoint you. If there was a way I could physically make the trip, I hope you know I’d do it in a second. Thank you so much for your understanding, love, and support. I hope you all have the BEST time and take lots of pictures for me! #TTBF Xoxo Kerri

- In an effort to be more open about my illness, here’s a selfie taken post-tour. I need to get oxygen twice a week along with my regular treatments, and I think it’s important to see some of the less glamorous parts we (as a society) don’t always share online. I’d also like to thank my publisher for doing everything in their power to make this tour as easy on me as possible. I still crashed HARD some days, but the time off was expertly scheduled and allowed me to regroup. Thank you to every reader, every author, and every bookseller who helped make the #HuntingPrinceDracula Tour such a wonderful experience. xoxo

- on September 11 2001 I was a college freshman who lived downtown. that morning, i stood there, helplessly watching as the second plane crashed into the building. i felt the rumble when the towers fell, the gut-wrenching sickness knowing people were trapped inside. one minute the buildings were there, broken, smoking but standing. the next they were goneβ€”a gash in the NYC skyline. i witnessed other horrors that i will never forget. part of Audrey Rose’s journey through PTSD was inspired by my own experience during the events of 9/11. instead of posting a picture of the terror, i’m sharing a bit of beauty. on our darkest days, there’s still hope and goodness to be found, even if it’s something as simple as an Autumn leaf. sending all of my love to everyone back home on this tough day. #neverforget #nyc

- HPD’s acknowledgments mention medical issues and I wanted to share them. Last fall I had the flu that turned into bronchitis that turned into pneumonia that lasted for months. Things got so bad by January that I literally couldn’t sit up in bed without slumping over and falling asleep for hours. Blood panels came back showing nearly every major organ under attackβ€”my white blood cells were one point above a cancer patient’s, and my adrenals were almost completely depleted. My brain was affected so badly I couldn’t hold verbal conversations without stumbling over words and forgetting others entirely. The brain fog mimicked dementia and it was a dark and terrifying place. After several more tests my doctor discovered I have late-stage/neurological Lyme. It was lying dormant in my body until stress activated it last fall. Lyme Disease is called the β€œNew Great Imitator” because of the wide variety of symptoms that mimic other diseases and make it difficult to diagnose. I’m still undergoing weekly treatments, and I still struggle with daily brain fog and joint pain and exhaustion. Stressβ€”both good and badβ€”leaves me debilitated, so I have to be hyper aware of signals my body sends now. However, when I see pictures of myself on okay days with makeup on, my hair done AND being dressed, I think of how impossible those simple things were a few months ago. I have more flare-ups than not, but thanks to my doctor, my loved ones, agent, and the team at JIMMY books, I’m staying positive and fighting the good fight. To my fellow #spoonies, I implore you to research symptoms of late-stage/chronic Lyme. Symptoms I thought were totally unrelated stemmed from it (too many to list in this post). I never had that bull’s eye ring, but here I am battling the disease. If this post helps even one person, I’m happy to have shared it. xoxo
