- Zimbabwe is on my mind. It's been over 5 years since I was there, and I told myself that once Robert Mugabe, their "president" or dictator or authoritarian ruler was ousted that I would return for a visit. I would return and maybe there wouldn't be Zimbabwe military at checkpoints throughout the city who would stick their rifles in our faces. Maybe there wouldn't be as much fear when we mentioned politics or elections or whispered of the slums that were waiting to be bulldozed by the government. Mugabe is currently under house arrest after a military coup took over, but my hope that Zimbabwe will be turned over to the people I met, worked with, lived with and walked with is slim to nonexistent. Zimbabwe has amazing students and young adults and teachers and community members who want to participate in the making of their country, who want rights and who are waiting to live with less fear...but this coup will likely impact their lives for decades, and I don't think it will be for the better. I've been waiting for the day that Mugabe would no longer be in power, but now that it's here... It's not what I was hoping it would be. #zimbabwe

- The drums are calling old man, and they are louder by the day. They are calling you to judgement and now's the time to pay for the wrongs you've done your country and the trust betrayed.  So hear those drums swelling, hear well and be afraid. You came to power on waves of hope that you would make your mark,  in a land that shone in African like diamonds in the dark. In simple faith the people put their trust in your care, and were repaid by the Fifth Brigade and the CIO and fear. Thirty seven years of motorcades and lavish trips abroad a nations heritage is lost through patronage and fraud. The Chiefs grow fat while people starve and famine stalks our homes. On idle farms the weeds grow rank and cover cattle bones. the youth are taught your slogans but even as they sing the drums of change are beating for the truth is seeping in. The demagogue has feet of clay and lies will not sustain the shattered land that once seemed free and will be so again. Too late to blame the drought, the Brits, the whites, the MDC. For all know where the finger points with cold finality. So hear the drums, old man, and listen to them well, They foretell of your end days and they have much to tell. for he who sows the seeds of hate will reap the grapes of wrath, so tremble in your bed at night, at the end of your sorry path. #zimbabwe #maythisbethechange #foreveretchedonmyskin #flamelillies #2017youcanfinallyhaveyourturnaround

Trump to end the 2014 ban on importing elephant trophies from #Zimbabwe & #Zambia to the U.S. Please reshare #EllenDegeneres new campaign #BeKindToElephants. For every share she will donate to #DavidSheldrickWildlifeTrust to protect #Elephants in the wild and orphaned babies who's mothers were poached for their Ivory or sadly killed to be someone's trophy. 💔🐘💔 “Killing an elephant will not conserve the species,” stated DSWT “Lifting the import ban will act only to encourage hunters to secure permits to kill elephants in the knowledge they can bring their ‘trophy’ home to the United States.” According to the Great Elephant Census, the elephant population dropped by 30% from 2007 to 2014, a loss of 144,000 elephants. Across Zimbabwe, it fell 6%, and substantial declines have been recorded along the Zambezi River in Zambia. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Contact the Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, imploring him to take a stand against reversing the ban. While Mr. Zinke appears to support hunting in various forms, it is important to register your disappointment and show that citizens do not support the proposed changes. Ellen has drafted a template letter, which includes contact details for where to send your message. - (LATimes) - In a surprise move, the Trump administration will suspend its recent decision to allow hunters to bring elephant trophies back to the U.S. from parts of southern Africa, President Trump announced Friday night on Twitter. . The move comes as celebrities, politicians and even some Trump supporters had intensely criticized the administration’s decision earlier this week to again allow the importation of elephant parts from Zambia and Zimbabwe. . “Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts,” Trump tweeted. “Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!” . Later Friday evening, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke issued a statement confirming the decision. . "President Trump and I have talked and both believe that conservation and healthy herds are critical. As a result, in a manner compliant with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations, the issuing of permits is being put on hold as the decision is being reviewed," Zinke said.
