- I woke up this morning feeling pretty worthless. Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the "what's next" feeling after such a big show last weekend, maybe it was just my mind. Whatever it was though this morning I could only see the bad things in life and about myself. I couldn't shake it. It really sucked. So I decided that today's mindfulness class with the K through second graders at Burning Tree would be about exploring feelings and how they show up for us in the mind and in the body. We started the class sharing our highs and lows, the great and not-so-great things that have happened to us in the last week, and then we went into a series of breathing exercises. One thing that I'm really enjoying is watching the kids practicing their breathing exercises on their own without me having to guide them. The room gets so quiet, it's a really special moment. Then I had the kids break off into pairs and to practice mindful sharing and listening, asking them to pay attention to what it felt like to share an experience with someone else and asking them to listen to their partner's experience without interrupting and vice versa. Next I had the students visualize certain emotions like anger, happiness, excitement, calm, etc. I asked them to share what color, shape, or animal they would associate with whatever feeling they were reflecting on. For some excitement was a cheetah, for one of the students anger was a volcano or parallelogram, calm was a fish or a koala for some of the kids. It was an interesting exercise for them to experience the different ways feelings show up for them in their minds. When anger arises we can say "oh there's that volcano I don't need to jump into it". When we want to be calm we can call to mind the colors that bring us there, or that fish or koala bear. We can be skillful with our feelings by noticing the different ways they show up for us and deciding how to interact with them in a way that brings us more happiness and doesn't pull us away from ourselves. It ended up being a really special class and needless to say my feeling of worthlessness passed. It was just a feeling, and it's gone now, replaced by happiness, thanks to my students❤
