- A Fetish Like No Other. Is architecture in a losing battle with machines? Often we appreciate architecture as an embodiment of machine vision, machine integration and machine thinking as a means to progress. Yet one questions, with all emphasis on machines, are we ultimately sidelining architecture to fetishize their articulation. In many cases yes, we are, we appreciate more the literal translation of machine to architecture through notions of aesthetics and often our machines which inhabit space are more articulate than our architecture. In these cases our architecture acts as a backdrop. This is not something we fully condone. We must be aware of the battles architecture has previously come across in the form of engineering. We must not allow architecture to become a showroom. We must not allow architecture to lose a battle which can undeniably be won. Without winning this battle, architecture will rely on the innovations of its past whilst showcasing the future as an object within.
