- FUN FACT FRIDAY - What's in a name? The term 'Essential oils' is actually not an accurate name. What's in a name? By any other word would smell as sweet! 'Essential' comes not from the meaning of something indispensable - all the oily enthusiasts scoff "say what?" - but as a reference to the substance being the ESSENCE of the plant it has come from. And as for the term 'oil', well it's really not an oil. Essential oils contain volatile (easily evaporated) aromatic compounds, and while most oils contain over 100 chemical compounds some can contain 450-500 chemical compounds. They are a hydrophobic liquid, which means they are repelled by - or more correctly, not attracted to the molecules in - water, just like fatty oils. It's in their similar behaviour when placed in water that gives them the oily name! So next time you want to add a drop of EO to your H2O, remember that it's phobic of the hydro and will need help from a dash of salt or a spot of honey to encourage them to play nicely 😉
