Personally, my own physical and mental health took a huge knock since starting shift work and I didn't realise. I couldn't see the signs and ploughed on, resulting in a huge burnout. In a strange way I am grateful it happened, because the changes I've implemented since has given me a sustainable way to live life to the full. Don't get me wrong, stress creeps back in all the time, but I am more aware of my own symptoms and can change my lifestyle when needed. I never knew this before, but apparently Mother Theresa understood the need for balance, especially for those in a caring profession. Those who care for others are more susceptible to compassion fatigue, where you slowly begin to lack any caring feelings for those in need, or nothing seems as serious or important to you as it might to others. I'll put my hand up and know that I have suffered with this. But Mother Theresa understood that her Nuns needed time out every once in a while and she would make them take very long breaks to focus on themselves. To enjoy life and be able to return full steam ahead. Self care is just as important now as it was then. For everyone. Never feel ashamed to take some time to focus on you, even if it's for 5 minutes!πŸ’š

- It has taken me a few years to finally understand that it's not only about training hard, but also about training smart. This morning I warmed up just fine. Went into my main set feeling good. Right when I was finishing up 7 of 8 I felt a sharp pain in my left knee. I slowed down to see if it was just a bad step and could recover but my knee wasn't having it. Perhaps I could have run through the pain, but we all know that all it takes is one more BAD push to potentially end a season. So I did what i normally would have not years back. I walked the remaining portion. Today was not about how strong I physically started, but about how strong i mentally finished.
