- A Darfuri girl with golden eyes living in the refugee camps of Eastern Chad—her face burnt into my mind. Barring the difficult trip to Eastern Chad, there are few ways of contacting her these days—and I often wonder what happened to her. Is she still stuck in the deep desert? Is she still prospect-less, without access to sufficient water, food, jobs and training just like the majority of refugees from Darfur that have been stuck here ever since 2003 when they fled their homes? It’s been 15 years since the beginning of the conflict and, if I had to bet, I’d say that the hundreds of thousands refugees here stand a slim chance on having their situation resolved or improved in short term. Neither Sudan, nor Chad can be counted among countries where the lives of Darfuri refugees might be regularized and given the possibility to amount to something more than endless idling in the dusty air of arid Sahel. — — Shot during an assignment for JRS in 2016. — — — #documentary #documentaryphotography #onassignment #report #reportage #reportagespotlight #refugees #refugeeswelcome #portrait #portraiturephotography #girl #face #africa #afrique #everydayafrica #everydayrefugees #education #bestoftheday #chad #darfur #sudan #southsudan #sahel #sahara #conflict #war #photooftheday

- The tax Conference Committee has come out with the final version of the tax bill. It is still a bad bill that will cause much harm. This bill will further increase the gap between the rich and the poor. Income and wealth disparity will increase even more. The richest corporations and Americans will get tax cuts they don’t need. The middle class will carry a bigger tax burden. The shrinking middle class is already struggling under the oligarchy and if this conference bill passes they will struggle even more to make ends meet. The worst part about this bill is that the $1.4 trillion deficit it will create will set the stage to cut vital benefits Americans have paid taxes on will be cut mercilessly. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be cut to pay for the tax bill. This is something republicans have tried to do so many times. We can’t let this happen. Progressive groups need to come together to stop the republicans from gutting benefits we need the most. #fightfor15 #progressive #humanrights #bernie2020 #senatorSanders2018senate #ourrevolution #electionfraud #janesanders #berniesanders #irc #blm #medicareforall #refugeeswelcome #ninaturnerohio #puertorico #obamacare #rohingya #democraticsocialist #poverty #palestine

- “I’m very interested in helping people, because giving assistance to them is like helping my parents, so we get a lot of gratitude from them, not only in this life, but also in the next life. In our culture, people are living in this life, but they’re also very concerned about the next life. I believe in that. Currently, I’m the president of our community, the Australian Arakanese Association. I was elected because I was an interpreter for the UNHCR in Malaysia, so people believed I could speak English well. I also enjoy dancing, so I used to teach my culture’s traditional dance here. When we celebrated the Water festival last year, I taught many people my culture’s dance. I like the people in Australia, because they are very friendly. Even though we don’t know each other, they always greet, “Hi, how are you?” But it’s hardly said in my country. We hardly say anything if we don’t know them. So, I really really like the people here.” Story 21 - Khaing Soe Klin is an Arakanese refugee from Myanmar. He lived in a refugee camp in Malaysia for 9 years, and moved to Australia 18 months ago. He now lives in Cairns with his wife, and is studying an aged care course at James Cook University.
