- . 11th place WLM 2017: The Derelict West Pier of Brighton United Kingdom By Matthew Hoser (@matthoserphoto) . Matthew thinks what makes his photo stand out is its simplicity. The long exposure (eight seconds, using a ten-stop neutral density filter) allowed him to smooth out the water and get a slightly smoky effect at the shore. This really allowed the strong lines of the derelict pier to stand out. He also likes the contrasting textures of the pebbly sand and the soft water, and how a couple of pigeons managed to stay still for the full eight seconds. . Matthew took this photo while on a short trip with his girlfriend down to Brighton in August last year (about two and a half hours from where he lives.) They had seen the derelict pier from the extant Brighton Pier the previous day, so they decided to walk down the beach to check it out. And the outcome was this winning photo. .
