- Some photos and footage I took today at the Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival. Pearly Kings and Queens is a London tradition started by Henry Croft in the 19th century who was an orphan, road sweeper and rat catcher from Somers Town, London. The tradition of wearing buttons sewed on to your clothes originated with the Costermongers who used the buttons as a way of recognising each other and looking out for one another. Croft inspired by the Costermongers began covering clothes in pearl buttons as a way of attracting attention to himself whilst raising money for charity. He soon appointed various kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses across London and in 1911 an organised pearly society was formed. #pearlykingsandqueens #pearlyking#pearlyqueen #harvestfestival #london#guildhallsquare #cockney #traditions#folkcustom #charity #pearlys #artist#benedge #inspiration
