- If he is not the greatest actor of his generation, Daniel Day-Lewis (1957-) is certainly one of the most committed to his craft. London born with a poet father and actress mother, always a rebel at school, growing up his three passions were woodworking, acting and fishing. He described his film debut as "heaven" playing a teenage vandal in "Sunday Bloody Sunday" at 14 yrs of age. Without enough experience to take up cabinet making he would study acting making his first impression in theater and TV roles before his acclaimed performance in "My Beautiful Laundrette." In a complete change of pace in "A Room with a View" and then "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" he not only displayed his hallmark versatility but it was an early sign of his selectiveness when choosing roles. Stunning as Christy Brown in "My Left Foot" he was rewarded with an Oscar. The fine "The Last of the Mohicans" was his first major hit, Oscar nominated again for the true story of "In the Name of the Father" as Gerry Conlon, his next "The Age of Innocence" with Pfeiffer underperformed as did "The Crucible" and the well liked "The Boxer." Taking his first sabbatical his return in Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" with Di Caprio was electrifying he was Oscar nominated for this smash. After another 5 year break his return would win him a second Oscar for his towering performance in "There Will Be Blood." Even when the films were not praised like the musical "Nine", his preparation beforehand and his total emersion into character during filming is legendary. "Lincoln" for Spielberg would win him an unprecedented third Oscar for Best Actor, make him a Top 10 box-office star in '12 (he was just outside the 10 in '92) and this historical drama big box-office. A unique and remarkable craftsman on screen. He said, "I suppose I have a highly developed capacity for self-delusion, so it's no problem for me to believe I'm somebody else." Many believe this actor to be the greatest of our time. With one film remaining to be released before his announced retirement from acting we are indeed fortunate to have preserved for all time his brilliant gallery and enormous talent on screen. #danieldaylewis #1957
