- **For those of you who have been checking up on #macroinvertebratemonday regularly, you likely know by now that my speciality is aquatic entomology. However, I'm quickly running out of specimens to share and have been going on regular scavenger hunts to find something interesting so if you have an interesting specimen that you'd like me to ID to the best of my ability then please do submit your photo and maybe you'll get featured!** Today we have an unfortunate bicatch of riverine sampling; a Myrmica rubra or European Fire Ant. This one is a worker and what you can't see here is the stinger. Fire Ants can bite but what you'll really notice is their sting which is surprisingly fierce for their small stature. You may think that this specimen looks a lot like a wasp and that's because they are; ants and wasps share a common precursor ancestor going all the way back to the cretaceous in the fossil record. Neat! #hymenoptera #ant #fireants #macro #monday #water #creepy #crawler #neat #insect #insects #bug #bugsofinstagram #nature #education #educate #science #sciencerules #animal #animals #nikon #microscope #Ontario #Canada
