I particularly enjoyed making this subtle connection in the painting between Heaven and Earth, as a way of alluding to the timeless and metaphysical inter-connectedness of all the heavenly bodies, of which our planet is one. …..the Earth is represented in this painting very literally by the gravel and soil on the ground….The Earth is the ultimate symbol of all life and the stage upon which, from a human perspective, all phenomena and divine forces are manifested. The other elements - water, air, and fire are life forces too, but Earth is the accommodator, the great receiver. It is no wonder the ancient Greeks thought all life emanated from a union between the Earth and the sky…. When I began to paint ‘The Heavens’ I knew that the ground would be where I would start. I set out to paint every piece of gravel and grain of sand as if it were a jewel.”
