- I've posted a lot of pictures of races I felt I did well in, races where I've PR'd, races where I exceeded my own expectations of myself, races I felt were obvious examples of my progression with running and success. This was not one of them. This was one of the worst #races I've ever ran- and to date- my slowest half #marathon with Rock N Roll. I woke up with a serious infection the day of this race. I wasn't able to make it upstairs to the hotel room before I vomited violently multiple times in the downstairs hotel lobby restroom. It was a miracle I made it through the uber ride back to the hotel. By the time this day was over, I had visited Urgent Care and been given antibiotics. During this race, I cried, and spent half the race texting my Mom about how much pain I was in, and how miserable I was. As much pain as I was in- I kept telling myself that I simply had to FINISH, and doing so reminded me that sometimes- in #relationships, in #fitness, in friendships, in #work, in our careers- in anything in life- it's the times that challenge us most, the times when we FEEL like we're most failing- that we're actually winning. We're learning how to push through, how to overcome, how to conquer, how to ENDURE. Enduring pushback and challenge and pain is one of the most important skills to have in life. When you can withstand tough times- when you can learn to push through without faltering- in ONE area of your life- you learn you can do so, in other areas too. As we're coming into the #finish line in one of the hardest half marathons of my life, on first glance it looks like I am showing a slight smile- but it's really a grimmace. And nonetheless- with hindsight- I am more proud of this moment- than so many others where this felt easy by comparison. The lesson here? Don't #run away from #pain, don't hide from what's hard, don't seek out easy street, don't feel like you're failing or losing if you're #struggling. These moments toughen us, harden us, prepare us- for things that are harder later.
