- The battle of #Antietam is remembered as bloodiest single day in American history. By the end of September 17, 1862, over 23,000 soldiers were dead, wounded, captured, or missing after twelve hours of intense fighting. The National Archives holds many Civil War battlefield maps, including maps of Antietam that were annotated with information from commanding officers to show battle lines, locations of regiments and artillery, and headquarters. - #knowyourhistory 📸: @centralbuckscivilwar ・・・ #Onthisday 155 years ago Colonel Samuel Croasdale from #Doylestown was killed leading the 128th PA Volunteers at #antietam MD. Croasdale, a lawyer, served in the three month 25th PA and then raised company C of the 128th PA in Doylestown. Only about a month after mustering into service, Croasdale, now the commander of regiment, led the men in their very first action. The regiment advanced through the East Woods and out into the Corn field where they were met with a murderous volley from concealed Confederates. Croasdale was killed instantly by this volley and his body was brought back to be interned in Doylestown Cemetery. - #Onthisday in 1862 Durell's Independent Battery D Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery fought at the battle of #Antietam MD. The battery was raised in #Doylestown and was made up of men from #Berkscounty and #Buckscounty. On Sept 17, 1862, the battery crossed Burnside's Bridge after the charge of the 51st PA from #montgomerycountry. On the South Side of Antietam Creek the battery supported the charge of the 9th NY Hawkins Zouaves who captured a rebel battery. When the rebel battery was recaptured, Durell's battery fired percussion and timed shot and dismounted one of the rebel guns. Gunners Isaiah J. Sellers from Doylestown and John C. Sherwood from Morrisville were wounded. Sherwood died of his wounds a few months after the battle. The battery lost eleven horses to wounds and exhaustion. The drawing of the battery in action was done by William T Trego for the unit history by Charles A Cuffel (pg. 83). #civilwar #localhistory #anti1862 #mdcivilwar #pacivilwar #preservation #artillery #williamtrego #arthistory

- #Onthisday in 1862 A. Howard Booz, or Booze, from #Carversville Pa was killed in action at the battle of #Antietam. Booz was 18 years old and a private in company C, 128th PA. After Col Croasdale was killed and the regiment's second in command wounded by Confederate fire from the Cornfield, the inexperienced and momentarily leaderless 128th PA halted. The men would not advance or retreat but stood in confusion taking heavy casualties. Officers from nearby regiments ran over to assist and the Pennsylvanians collected their nerves and advanced into the cornfield driving some of the rebels away in front of them. The regiment suffered 34 killed and 85 wounded. Booz is buried in Carversville Cemetery.
