- Did they know their land would have a Fridays and an office park someday? Swipe left for pics of the grave markers, located in a small wooded area between the office park and a Beltway on-ramp. (There's something very 1970s about the phrasing "left home at age 19 to fight Indians", like that was just the obvious thing to do.) Try googling for "Toaping Castle Walkers" if you want to see genealogy buffs arguing about the history given on this sign. #princegeorgescounty #marylandhistory

- The Lloyd Street Synagogue’s walls have many stories to tell. Having opened in 1845 as the first synagogue built in the state of Maryland and today being the third oldest standing synagogue in the United States, the Lloyd Street Synagogue has seen its share of our country’s history. . . The Synagogue was originally home to the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation (1845-1889), which consisted mostly of German Jews. In 1889, Lithuanian Catholics bought the building and made it the St. John the Baptist Lithuanian Catholic Church (1889-1905). In 1905, a group of Eastern European Jews, specifically Hasidic Jews from Ukraine, bought the building and reverted it back into a synagogue. This Congregation was called the Shomrei Mishmeres Ha-Kodesh (1905-1960). . . The Congregation dwindled in Baltimore and in 1963 the building was purchased by the Jewish Museum of Maryland who began restoration. Full restoration and excavation was completed in the 2000s and today, The Synagogue Speaks exhibit retells the tales of these congregations and the building’s architectural story. . . - As a writer and a student of History... There aren't enough superlatives to justify the gravity of this venue, this segue into an ugly piece of American history that many would be content to wrap themselves in naivete about. It is criminal that many people would choose to plead ignorance to one of American history's original sins, simply because it is... Ugly, inhumane and doesn't match up with the lofty words of its founding. Man's inhumanity towards their fellow man... Is our consistent inconsistency. And the subsequent pushback which was enveloped in the confines of faith, buttressed by the resolve to be better, to be consequential. Before I walked through the doors, I smiled broadly as my son snapped the first in this series of pictures - because I knew I would be inspired. #history #harriettubman #americanhistory #legacy #ancestors #photography #maryland #marylandhistory #inspiration #juneteeth #africanamericanhistory #history #nationalhistoricsite #fathersday #nationalparkservice #writer #amwriting #writerlife #writersofinstagram

- As if I needed more fuel to the fire for my genealogy, ancestral whispering, research of my family tree and the shoulders that I stand on. On the eve of Juneteenth... Being at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad historical was nothing short of ethereal. Although I have no kinship to this amazing woman... (Lord knows I checked) Harriet Tubman is, the essence of the word Freedom Fighter as she has always held me in an awestruck deference of sorts. Being in the confines of the places where she may have walked made my hair stand on end. So... I couldn't resist taking a click next to a bust of this glorious woman, complements of a woman who was gracious enough to offer taking this shot of my son and I. #freedom #history #americanhistory #harriettubman #juneteenth #maryland #marylandhistory #stateparks #undergroundrailroad #fathersandsons #father #fathersday #photographs #photographs #easternshore #freedomfighter #nationalparkservice
