- Should you use compound exercises or isolation exercises to build and sculpt your body? . In my opinion you should use both. In my training programs I will focus on using the compound exercises (like the squat, deadlift, bench press, over head press and barbell rows) to increase my strength. I will do these at the start of my session when my energy is highest and I can focus on lifting as much weight as possible whilst keeping good form. . I will move onto isolation exercises (like the leg extension, lying leg curl, direct arm work, lateral raises etc) to focus on squeezing the target muscles and forcing as much blood into them as I can. I will perform the isolation exercises at a higher rep range (10-20 reps per set) with a weight that I can control. . If time is short then focus on your compound exercises. These work multiple muscles at once and will give you more 'bang for your buck'.
