- Meet our sweet little Kiwi, Emilia: "My Mum and Dad think I am an absolute warrior princess, and I think they're right! In my short one year of life, I have been through quite a lot in the last two months. I had a very cruisey ten months and was the most happiest and chilled out wee girl. Then one day when I was eleven months old, I woke up feeling absolutely rubbish! Luckily for me, Mum and Dad didn't muck around, but when I was admitted to hospital, I was already in a state of ketoacidosis, with BGL of 56 mmol/L (1020 mg/dL)! I was one very sick little girl, and it scared the living daylights out of my Mum and Dad, Dad even fainted in the ED!! Then so did my Nana when she came to visit me in ICU. It was a very scary time for me but I am lucky to be surrounded by such a loving family who never left my side for the whole two weeks I was in hospital - especially my big sister Sofia! Now 10 weeks into my diagnosis, I am doing really well, even though my BGL is still a bit all over the place, I am back to my happy wee self, and Mum and Dad have learnt to expertly inject me four times a day. I only cry sometimes and try to be really brave. We have had some hairy moments, with hypos, but for the most part, I laugh, play, giggle, and I have JUST started to walk so am pretty proud of myself about that. Mum and Dad are uber proud of me too, I know they worry about me ALL of the time, but I know I am in their safe hands, and it will only get better, especially when I start to talk and can tell them how I am feeling! Mum and Dad tell me all this time that Type 1 won't hold me back!"
