- 1️⃣ Mamá, the 27-meter spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois, is an ode to his mother, who was a weaver. Its (her?) delicate legs, which also form gothic arches, carry the massive sculpture in a more tender, motherly way than would, say, big, nasty, muscular, furry tarantula legs. Not a fan of spiders... 2️⃣ The Delegación Territorial de Sanidad y Consumo de Bizkaia, with its glass facade. 3️⃣ The Guggenheim Museum, opened in 1997, and the newest, tallest building in Bilbao, the Iberdrola tower. Iberdrola is a Spanish electricity company. 4️⃣ Zubizuri, Basque for "white bridge," is yet another work from architect Santiago Calatrava. He is touchy about changes to his designs and charges a mint for them (see also, Oculus in NYC), which creates controversy around nearly every project, especially when financed publicly. This bridge has a glass deck, which, in Bilbao's very wet climate, created a hazard to pedestrians. To his chagrin, Bilbao installed non-slip carpeting across a portion of the bridge but left the edges open to show the original deck. 5️⃣ The Metro de Bilbao, designed by Normal Foster, began service in 1995. Its station designs are open and airy, not unlike D.C.'s, but without D.C.'s fires, derailments, flooding, and sleeping station managers. Like Madrid's Metro and Spanish railways, its trains run on the left (the British way). The trains are Basque-built by CAF, in Beasáin, a nearby town/small city. It is one of the most immaculate public spaces I have ever seen. 6️⃣ The Puente de Vizcaya, inaugurated in 1893, is a solution to a port city's need to bridge (no pun intended) the gap created by the river while still allowing large vessels to pass. A suspended car crosses the river and carries foot traffic as well as automobiles. From the top, you can see the Basque hills and the Cantabrian Sea. The four main towers are original, but the trestle and car itself are from the 1940s and 2000s, respectively. It is in Portugalete, to the north of Bilbao. 7️⃣ La Ría de Bilbao, or Estuary of Bilbao, which snakes its way through the city. #bilbao #spain #museum #guggenheim #rio #puente #spider #araña #metro
