The unboxing of an order of Alex the III boneless chicken meal is sensory overload. First, the scent: I love peanut java sauce and grilled meats. Makes my mouth water as I type.
Then when I open the box after struggling with the scotch tape, the sense of touch – I feel a breath of steam. The rice is hot. The meat, gloriously glistening and hot off the grill, is charred in all the right places.
My mouth waters.
I inhale a bit, fingers impatiently flattening the box (that doubles as a plate), then peel off the wrapper of the java rice after opening the container of achara. I tear off a corner the packet of peanut sauce, squeeze it empty all over the rice, and mix. My fork pierces a chunk of chicken which I partner with the saucy rice all while my insides rejoice at how the charcoal grilled bits coat everything in fat and flavor.
A teeny taste of achara and I go all caveman: One spoonful after another, barely breathing in between swallows.
I try to slow down.
But 10 minutes tops, and I’ve licked everything clean. 👍🏼😜 #mychefstable
