- A misty evening at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Building 131 overlooks Dry Dock 4, an 800-foot dock completed in 1912 to accommodate new classes of "Dreadnaught"-style battleships. Known as the "hoodoo dock," this structure was so challenging to build - in large part due to the Yard's naturally swampy geography - that it took 3 different construction companies 7 years to complete, and 20 workers lost their lives in accidents. Once complete, the Yard could now build and service massive steel battleships, including the USS Arizona, which spent several months in the dock in the winter of 1916-17 following an engineering casualty. The dock was expanded in 1941 so that it could (just barely) fit the newly-built USS North Carolina. The dock is not currently in service for ship repair, though its caisson and pumps are still place. . . . . #brooklynnavyyard #brooklyn #nyc #navalhistory #ussarizona #drydock #shipbuilding #shiprepair #usnavy #cranes #industrial #urbex #urbanexploration #urbanexploring @bklynnavyyard @ussarizona #seeyourcity #nyc @battleshipnc #ussnorthcarolina #battleship #ww1 #wwi #worldwarone @ww1cc
