- Chloe, a Project Manager with 2 years experience, is flying high! She has learned some great tricks this past year including the rule of three. The rule of three is just a strategy or approach (not PMBOK - Just a Bizzeebobber "thing" 😆) that works best during an implementation.
1. Never try to push more than 3 lofty concepts across to a client during a conference call. More than that is too much to absorb in one sitting. It's ok to discuss smaller tasks or anecdotal items, but when planning the call don't try to cover TOO much. Remember, clients (Project contacts) have full-time jobs on top of their involvement with projects.
2. Always use a rolling 3 week period, when managing a project. Staying 3 weeks ahead is proactive, but more than that you can lose focus (and get too far out in front of things). Likewise, 2 weeks may not be far enough out. You always want to provide an adequate amount of time to get any necessary homework done or for other resources to be able to join the call... 3 weeks ahead at all times is the sweet spot.
3. Never more than 3 calls per week (especially assuming they are 60 min duration). You won't get the attention you desire and it could have a negative impact on the project long-term. People / project resources will be multi-tasking during calls, or just won't attend, etc.
👍 There is more, but 3 is always a key number. This principle applies to any project work you might be doing on behalf of clients (but most specifically software implementations, which is my domain expertise)
🤔 How are your projects coming along in 2017?
