- The indomitable snowman ... Fiorenzo Magni ... Stage 20 Giro D’Italia 1956 ... Monte Bondone .. The context and conditions on this torturously fateful day in the Dolomites produced arguably one of the most epic stages in cycling history, men were made or broken along with their reputations ... The forecast was grim and many teams along with Magni’s Ganna team had asked for the stage to be cancelled or shortened but race director Torriani decided against it saying that the 1650m finish on the Bondone might produce some spectacle for what had been up to that moment a relatively tame edition of the Giro ... Actual events would far exceed his expectations ... It rained and sleeted from the start and in the downpour, the diminutive but talented climber from Luxembourg Charly Gaul “The Angel of the Mountains” riding for Faema attacked on the 3rd climb of the day, the Broncon along with the climber from the Atala team Bruno Monti ... Together they hammered out a pace and the peloton including the injured Magni who was riding with a broken left clavicle and humerus started losing time ... When they reached the Bondone the sleet had turned to snow and the temperature had plummeted further, riders started abandoning, frozen and broken ... Magni, not a natural climber was unable to pull hard on his handlebars with his left arm due to his injuries and had fallen behind but gave everything to hang on ... He started passing bicycles on cars, next to the roadside as the abandonments increased in the ever decreasing, desperate conditions ... To his disgust Magni also saw the wearer of Maglia Rosa Pasquale Fornara ... Magni said later that if it were him wearing the pink jersey he would rather have walked than quit ... More than 60 riders would quit on the stage Magni gave everything and incredibly finished 3rd on the Stage and had climbed to 2nd in the GC by 3 minutes and 27 seconds to the new leader and eventual winner of the 1956 Giro D’Italia ... Charly Gaul ... Gaul collapsed on crossing the line, they lifted him from his bicycle and had to cut his frozen woollen short sleeved jersey from his body to wrap him in warm blankets ... 10 minutes later regaining conciousness ..

- Charly Gaul at the finish of the final mountain stage at the 1956 Giro d'Italia. Gaul climbed to the summit finish of Monte Bondone in blizzard-like conditions. His hands and feet blue from the cold, they had to cut his clothes from his frigid body to warm him up. You wouldn't know it from the photo, but Gaul had an incredible day on the bike. Never in the history of this race has a rider gone from being outside the top ten to overall race leader - in one day (He started the day in 24th place!). Perhaps the greatest pure climber of all time, this Luxembourger was know as "The Angel of the Mountains". #charlygaul #giroditalia #montebondone #trento #nevergiveup #angelofthemountains #comeback #campionissimo #grimpeur #scalatore #faema #thickskin #fiorenzomagni #ninodefilippis #pinocerami #raphaelgeminiani #federicobahamontes #costalunga #alessandrofantini #pasqualefornara #epicvictory
