- Every Wednesday I attend LDS ARP 12-step which is followed by an aftercare program. I LOVE, LOVE these two meetings so much. We don’t follow the “rules” in either of these meetings, which makes these meetings off the chain amazing. I’ve been asked quite a bit lately to explain what our aftercare meeting is all about, so for those inquiring minds here it goes… Aftercare is a two to two and a half hour meeting conducted by two ARP missionaries, one is an addict in recovery and the other is a spouse of an addict, where we (addicts and spouses) discuss solutions to the problem. We are allowed to cross talk, which is a big reason why this meeting is so successful. We share our current issues, resources, underlying behavior, and real solutions. We challenge each other to do better, to try harder. It’s a very real, raw, vulnerable, and rigorously honest meeting. We have seen addicts or spouses storm out, many tears of frustration, hurt, pain, fear, or anger shed, people in denial about their situation, and walls of defense shoot straight up and then eventually come right down. The best thing I have seen is a transformation in individuals and couples. We see this over and over again and I love this part of recovery and healing so much! It’s that point where individuals start to believe their true worth, they start trusting the process, and they draw nearer to the Lord. This change of heart is amazing to watch and I will never get tired of it. These meetings have been a huge tool in creating a change in our stories, individually and in our marriage. I’m so thankful for the blessings that have come into our lives as we have diligently attending our Wednesday night group meetings because of the feelings we have felt and the messages that were meant just for us. I am now a teacher in the 12-step portion of our meetings. I will be primarily teaching from the Spouse Support Manual and occasionally the 12-step manual. Tonight I’m teaching principle one and there will be drawing and snacks involved! 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
