- In retrospect I probably shouldn't have bought this. Not because it's a bad album, or that I would prefer the Nonesuch reissue (which is overly expensive, might I add), but well, I could have settled for a much cheaper CD and spent the difference on those Z'EV albums I suddenly feel like I want a lot. It also isn't in the best condition. But hey. Lesson learned I guess. #stevereich #ecmrecords #vinyl #vinyladdict #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #vinylig #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylporn #instavinyl #nowplaying #nowspinning

- STEVE REICH "Three New Works: Music for a Large Ensemble, Octet, and Variations for Winds, Strings, and Keyboards" (1980). Original poster for an early, seminal performance by the Steve Reich and Musicians Ensemble, premiering what amounted to the second phase of his compositions for large ensembles. A fasincating piece of ephemera representing a turning point in the career of one of the twentieth century's most important composers, at the venue that not only debuted his music to the world at large, but defended it repeatedly until the world was listening. - I’ve been listening to Pat Metheny recordings since the early 1980s, and posting the Steve Reich album yesterday made me realise that I hadn’t included any Metheny on IG until now. He’s recorded dozens of albums so it’s difficult to choose, and although it’s somewhat perverse to start with one of his less popular recordings, I thought I’d follow Reich with Metheny’s ‘The Orchestrion Project’ (2013). In places the music bears some resemblance to Reich’s ‘Electric Counterpoint’. Not that this uses overdubs; instead Metheny performs solo on his ‘Orchestrion’, a collection of mechanical or robotic instruments which are ‘played’ through Metheny’s guitar – thus my comparison with the Reich composition. I suppose it’s the repetitive and accumulative quality of the music, as patterns are established on one instrument after another, over and through which Metheny improvises. Listen for yourself to these few seconds from ‘Improvisation #2’. #patmetheny #stevereich #orchestrion #orchestrionproject #jazz #instajazz #igjazz #nowplaying #nowlistening #nowspinning #jazzcollection #musiccollection #robotmusic #robotics #jazzmusic #jazzaddict #jazzlover #improvisation #jazzimprovisation #guitar #counterpoint #albumoftheday #cdcollection #cdjazz #jazzguitar
