- The adventure continues. After the 20 mile boat ride through the jungle we arrived at Lamanai. It is a sprawling ancient Mayan city. In fact, it was one of the last cities in the empire to be abandoned, a little over a thousand years ago. I can only imagine what this place looked like back then perched on the banks of the river. Truth is, much of the site still has not been excavated. That has had my Indiana Jones sense tingling for years. To know that underneath any of the dirt mounds on site lies untold history just boggles my mind. Lack of funding is the main reason why much of Lamanai remains unexplored. This photo is of the Mask Temple, which is the smallest of the 3 pyramid/temples visible in the area. The mask in the foreground was not discovered until 2011, but they always knew it was there because there was a mask on the other side of the temple. Mayans did everything symmetrically. Fascinating and right up my alley. #belize #lamanai #natgeo #natgeotravel #ruins #mayan #mayanruins #masktemple #travel #travelstagram #nature #wanderlust #beautifuldestinations #adventure #adventuretravel #photooftheday #picoftheday #travelphotography
